Take responsibility for your own choices, decisions and actions. Just because there's going to be a casino in Singapore, does not mean that you have to go in and start gambling. Hardcore gamblers have always made that trip up to Genting, or taken cruises where there are casinos on board, all this while. So just because there's going to be a casino here, does not mean that suddenly, the govt is responsible for an individual's gambling addiction.
So, what next for a 'granny' nation? We seem to expect our govt to do a lot of 'mothering' and yet, we complain about the lack of freedom and what-not.
So, what next, really? Going by this trend of thought, if an individual develops food addiction or becomes bulimic, do we ban the sale of food?
Does a demand for prostitutes account for their presence here, or does their presence here create that very demand? Did need fuel the provision of the service, or did the availability of the service create the need?
Choices and responsibilities... stop blaming the govt or anyone else. -
I find it ironic that there are people clamouring for more freedoms on one hand ... but are worried about erosion of values, etc when something like the casino comes up ....
either there are two distinct camps of people here ..... or some chaps are contradicting themselves ...

More likely, it's the latter. Thing is, a lot of folks pay lip service to the most popular, most touted 'opinion'. Instead of pondering more on the matter and then weighing the pro's and con's, debating it out with friends and what-not so that one learns from alternative views, they take the easy way out of 'adopting' someone else's popular ideas and make it theirs.
No one expounds theories and all that... let others do it, then we'll just put our own stamp on it!

is there NOTHING as screwed up as economics?
revenue = GDP
indiscriminate revenue..
take for example.. smoking...
cost of tobacco = revenue
taxes = revenue
$$ to treate illnesses cause by smoking = revenue
$$ spent to combat spread of smoking = revenue
ban smoking, suddenly our GDP drops by a hell of a lot...
bring this over to the Casino thing..
revenue brought in by casino = revenue
people spending money = revenue
$$ used to combat gambling addiction = revenue
$$ used to clean up the sleaze and vice attracted by casinos = revenue
well, the GDP may increase, but the cost to the people is tremendous...

In today's 9:30pm news on Ch 5, IMH reveals that they are sprucing up a few of their current wards to convert them to handle addictions, namely, gambling addiction, and addiction to substances.
Looks like they're gearing up for potential problems already! -
