I've been telling him that he should try to get to a more senior position so that he can fight more for his subordinates. But then again, that would mean sucking up to the superiors and, that's not our Bear. 
Well, surprise him one day by turning up at one of our drinking sessions / outings. The next one we're having is our 1st Anniversary celebrations at Kuishin-Bo! -
