Hmm...where to start...briefly, Dunhuang is famous for the caves with its Buddhist drawings dating thousands of years back, the most famous being Mo Gao Ku which is opened to the public, and there's the the Ming Sha Shan which is a dessert to play sand in, ride camels lah. Also found here is the town (forgot the name) with the Flaming Mountains (Huo yan shan) from the Journey to the West stories....so called coz the temp is really really hot, easily over 45+ deg C.Originally posted by Fatum:Isan National Park ! ...
I'm a sucker for national parks ...
around pattaya there's Khao Yai National park .... and east out from pattaya there's
Koh Samet, and the surrounding islands which are beautiful and quite unspoilt, unlike phuket ...
tell me more about your china trip in particular xinjiang and dunhuang ...
I don't have lots of leave also...have to save very hard for them. Our backpacking trips are very good value for money one...coz accom can be cheap, and food can be cheap...depends on your level of luxury lor.Originally posted by choco B:I have alot of constraints deh... If I manage to cover half your mileage, consider very good liao
nice ... backpacking is the way to go eh ... my experience with ulu china is rather limited, only as far as hang zhou .... i'm thinking of lugging up my backpack again after grad and travel from china to pakistan through the Karakorum highway .... or perhaps to dunhuang and xinjiang .....Originally posted by Wanda:Hmm...where to start...briefly, Dunhuang is famous for the caves with its Buddhist drawings dating thousands of years back, the most famous being Mo Gao Ku which is opened to the public, and there's the the Ming Sha Shan which is a dessert to play sand in, ride camels lah. Xinjiang is a big stretch of land + dessert (e.g. Takalamatan (sp)? dessert), including the city of Urumqi with its Heavenly lake at almost 2000m altitude, Kashgar in the west (near to Pakistan) which is inhabited mainly by the Uygher (pronounced Wee-ghur) tribes who are muslim but look like Europeans/Russians. They have lots of the hamid melon which has been making its way to local supermarts.
Ahahaha....typo for desert....it almost felt like sinking in ice-cream on the fine sand though.Originally posted by choco B:A dessert big enough to play in? that's alot of ice cream
Oh...i did the pakistan-karakoram highway to Kashgar in '97. I like pakistan, esp. the north from Gilgit to karimabad - that was before 9-11. I wd like to bring SO but the situation now may not be stable.Originally posted by Fatum:nice ... backpacking is the way to go eh ... my experience with ulu china is rather limited, only as far as hang zhou .... i'm thinking of lugging up my backpack again after grad and travel from china to pakistan through the Karakorum highway .... or perhaps to dunhuang and xinjiang .....

Omigod ... Chinese toilets !!! .... ........ they are certainly very challenging places ...Originally posted by Wanda:Oh...i did the pakistan-karakoram highway to Kashgar in '97. The only thing to deal with and is the most culturally shocking thing is their toilets.
Well, if do you go to pakistan's northern c'tryside...it's good to go with a female companion...they treat woman like queen sometimes...and easy to hitch a ride or ask for help when needed. I was quite amazed by some of the menfolk's gentlemanly manners. But in the cities like Islamabad...it's no good, the men stare at women like suaku...better cover up with scarf and shaws.Originally posted by Fatum:Omigod ... yeah ... been thinking about the highway thingy for a long time liao ... picked up this backpack wander lust of mine from reading "Bei4 Bao1 Zhou3 Tian1 Ya2" series of books from this chinese write chap ....
but you're right .... i dunno if the highway would be feasible nowadays .... kashmir and lake Dal would be out too of course ...

No, didn't even dream of it, with all the fierce fighting back then. Oh, on the KKH, do expect landslides, so plan a few days extra for delays. They are quite efficient in clearing the rubble though. Also, forget abt their domestic flight which gets backlogged for weeks.Originally posted by Fatum:did you manage to get to kashmir ? ...
