Oh, that's nice to know....that sr nurses are human, afterall. Guess the blur greenies sometimes do deserve to be scolded.Originally posted by Rhonda:Actually, Wanda, due to the nature of our job, a lot of time, the seniors are on hard to the juniors and newbies because they are held responsible for their mistakes. This means that they have sudden, extra workload and new staff are pretty hard to train because everyone's stretched to the max and this is just an extra burden few would relish.
It doesn't help that a lot of newly-graduated nurses seem to be really blur about stuff that they should know by then. Maybe, as student nurses on hospital attachments back then, they should've taken their attachments a tad more seriously. I used to rebuke the students when they fail to know what they ought to know by their level because they should take their learning and training seriously.
You'll find that when you're up to the expectations and up to standard in your work, the seniors will start to leave you alone. I ended up 'softening' most of the seniors who came down hard on me and my colleagues - they can be charmed over one!
Eh, you gal and guy on shift duty can switch your brain to sleep at any hour of the day is it? Say, you have a morning shift (day 1), followed by an off-day (day 2), followed by night duty (day 3). So:Originally posted by Rhonda:Yippeee!! The rain clouds have come over to my side of the island!!
Later, can go sleep well! Night duty tonight!

Nope... even the seniors who've been at the job for more than 2 decades still have difficulties with their sleep and we all suffer from sleep deprivation, some worse than others.Originally posted by Wanda:Eh, you gal and guy on shift duty can switch your brain to sleep at any hour of the day is it? Day 3 - can still sleep during the day meh?
Would they ever ask you to work a day shift followed by night shift or vice versa?
BTW, Rhonda still works a 6-day week? 3- rotating shifts?
That fried potato patty, right? That's called the Bergedel (pronounced as 'Burger-dell' / 'Burger-dale').Originally posted by The man who was death:I prefer nasi padang, especially the fried potato

The rotating shifts sometimes drive us crazy. That's when I started my narcoleptic episodes, as Bear would term them. You'll find it's common to have insomnia for a few nights, and then crash for one day.
Think about it, I used to be a morning lark, now, I've evolved to a Night Owl!
We are on 2-week rosters, because our rosters are only released for two weeks each time. You'll get your next two weeks' roster from the mid to end of the 2nd week.
OK, here's a random eg. of a roster, bear in mind that no two weeks are the same.
D= Morning shift
E= Evening shift
N= Night Duty
RD= Rest Day
SD= Sleeping Day (meaning, you finish your night shift on the morning of this very day, so you won't be asked to return to work a 2nd shift on the same day, after you've completed 3 or 4 nights)
DO= Day Off, we get a Day Off every two weeks
1st week:
RD, D, E, D, E, D, E
2nd week:
D, N, N, N, SD, RD, DO
On the 1st week, we have the much-dreaded 'PAP' roster, which means the PM-AM-PM roster. It can KILL you. When you work evenings, you're supposedly off at 9:30pm, but you don't get to leave on-the-dot. When you reach home, depending on where you stay, it'll be 10+ to 11+pm. And the next morning, you're on the Day shift, which means, you might have to wake up from 5am onwards to get ready. This pattern repeats itself for the entire week... Nasty!!
The nurse managers try their best to give you a SD, RD, DO after you come off nights. If not, at least, a SD and RD. But, there have been cases of just SD, D, which can be a killer too because you're more or less like a zombie!
I guess it depends on how bad night shifts in your assigned ward can be. Generally, you'll be stretched to the max with a skeleton crew on duty. And if your dependancy rate of the patients under your charge is high, you'd be kept busy the entire night. Bad nights you'll barely finish your work till the 11th hour. Reeeeeeely bad nights you'll have to sacrifice your break totally. Nightmarish nights you only get to sit down a full six hours or more after you started work. These have all happened before!
I've heard of occasions when one of my 'jinxed' colleagues were around, THREE resuscitations, one after the other, and on top of that, one or two admissions!! The devil was on duty that night!
