Starting Work in a New Place

Share your experiences when you started work in a new company.
Was there a proper, structured orientation program or did it seem ad-hoc and hastily-put together?
How did the staff make you feel welcome? Or did they even bother?
Share any interesting anecdotes, observations and what-not!

Current company's orientation program only happen after I am with the company for about a month or so. Some colleagues waiting for a year to be in the orientation program I am in because they want to have a large group of people attending before having one.
nothing much... just tells you the core values of the company.. the big bosses make some speeches. You get your free company jacket and get back to work
Usually your new colleague don't have time to show you around and when it comes to lunch time.... a bit the stressed.. cos dont know who to join for lunch (if they ever ask the then 'new' me to join)
To settle down usually takes a few days.. or weeks. -
it happens to me once in a while... or new bosses...
each time, us guys who don't care about climbing and actually feel a responsibility to our duties of the job, will sit back and watch the dogs fall over themselves trying to be in the good book of the new boss
or if i enter a new environment, it's great to make new friends
but i think my experiences will be a little skewed as i'm already notorious in my organisation -
Hmm...mine is just a part time job...but when I first started, everyone was very friendly and helpful...
Only after a while they all show their true colors, my boss included...

Wah lau, Rhonda. I one-man woman leh. So, same with company. Boh start new place for a long time liao. More like pak si buay chao.
But I guess when new, observe first bah. Then take it from there. Familiarity adds confidence. -

I think one of the American MNC's I used to work for had a great Orientation program.
On the first day of work, the new employees would be welcomed by the HR staff first. Then, they'd be given a short orientation about the company, if there was only one or a small no. of new employees, and if there was a group of more than five, we'd put up a proper program where we'll invite reps from all depts to let them know a bit about every dept in the company.
They'll be given an Orientation file with the latest local newsletters and corporate newsletters, organisation charts, a brochure of the company products, useful info like the company's phone directory, HR policies, Employee Benefits, etc.
We'd then bring them around the place, let them tour the company's two facilities. Bring them to lunch, intro them to their immediate superior, who'll then intro them to their colleagues.
The culture in that workplace was really good. Sooooo unlike the culture in Nursing. I'll speak of the horrors later! -
This thread is good coz it show that no matter who u work for,workmate are always just that...err...workmate. U really c human being evil side when they really want the top spot.It sad to c how ppls will lie to cover their ass.ridiculous world this is...

The most memorable orientation will be the one i went in NEL.
Its a full day orientation that break up to 2 sections.
Morning 8.30 to 11am (2 bus depot visit and lunch buffets) 7.30pm to 10.30pm (NEL depot visit. view all tracks, trains and etc..)
The most enjoyable one will be the one in the nite..
Everyone wearing the safety vest, boots and helmets.
look so comical that all of us giggles and play around when the trainer isn't looking.
Some looks like doing 'corrective work" haa...

orientation very simple one mah... just a brief tour ard the office, intro to the colleagues....

my 1st day started with safety briefing by my safety officer. den go to my dept n introduction den star at pantry n read the manual they give me to read which im completly clueless
