hi, RhondaOriginally posted by Rhonda:subarugal, I'm not a doc so I can't make a diagnosis nor prescribe medicine.
For patients in our wards who have pitting edema, the doctors would commonly prescribe a diuretic drug, eg. Lasix (Furosemide). In bad cases, this drug is given via I/V, in other cases, the oral dose is given. Check to see if your mom has already been given this medicine. If not, speak to your doctor about the management of your mom's pitting edema.
Uricosuria... high levels of uric acid in the urine? Does she have gout or any other painful rheumatic conditions?
Foods to avoid, which causes high uric acid levels in the urine, would be :
- Beer, and all other alcoholic beverages.
- Anchovies (ie. 'gang hee'), sardines in oil, fish roes, herring.
- Yeast. (common in bread)
- Organ meat (liver, kidneys)
- Legumes (dried beans, peas)
- Meat extracts, consomme, gravies.
- Mushrooms, spinach, asparagus, cauliflower.
Hope this info helps your mom, subarugal!

Under normal circumstances, if there's excess water in the body, it'll just be eliminated as urine.
On your bike (if I may hazzard a guess)? 4 litres is a lot....1 camelbak not enough...how many hours on your bike?Originally posted by seow:Orh.
Anyway, the 4 litres were consumed while on the road so i guess the water would sort of evaporate?
i don't know about that ... but excessive drinking may lead to this condition called hyponatremia ... your blood becomes too diluted, cells become swollen, and you may die from it .... infact .... some marathoners have .....Originally posted by JLennon:what i understand is that lack of water will lead to water retention. Is that true? if that's the case excessive drinking should not lead to water retention?

When the body senses a drop in fluid levels, it will try to retain water by eliminating less fluids (less urine).Originally posted by JLennon:what i understand is that lack of water will lead to water retention. Is that true? if that's the case excessive drinking should not lead to water retention?
