Singaporean Rock Culture

Hey Guys/Gals,
I'm doing a study on rock culture among youths in Singapore.
In particular, I am studying how did this become a such popular trend among youths. Rock music, rock bands, jamming, performing at gigs.. etc
Anyone knows how? Did the success of Electrico start all this?
Almost everyone nowadays are forming their own rock/pop bands.
But what are the reasons behind it?
Is it because its the trend? - if yes then why?
Is it because fame and popularity will come along with the association of forming a band?
Even the press and media are getting involved.
Straits TImes with their "School of rock" competition
Power98 with "PowerJam"
If I'm not wrong, there are a lot more bands competitions which are up and coming
Feel free to post any links, opinions and insights you have about this issue. You guys/gals need not ans any of my questions. Any comment about this issue would be greatly appreciated. -
