Avian Flu - Are you afraid?

whenever this question popped up the answer frequently given seems to be 'singapore is a safe place, we are not afraid'.
i find this rather disturbing. bird flu is transmitted by migratory birds. it can come from any birds, from anywhere, airborne.
what has this got to do with our govt's ability. it is not like we can block out the sky like we stop SARS from coming in from the borders.
are you afraid? -

pigeons and crows more likely to get so still can eat chicken jus dun go to the bugis there all those temples there to pray, ironic sia go there pray for safety but so many pigeons might get avian flu

If you read this :

you'll know that you don't get Bird Flu by eating chickens. It gets transmitted when a person comes into contact with infected poultry or its excrement.
Scrutinised the entire fact sheet but didn't see anything about becoming infected by eating chicken. -

Come on, after saying all that, you wanna claim 'no flaming'? And after making a direct uncalled-for accusation, you say that offending people is 'not (my) intention'?

The worry about bird flu or any other viruses (or virii, if you like) is their propensity to mutate. even if the rate of mutation is very low, by virtue of the large number of replications (of the virus particles) it is quite likely that a mutation that leads to increase virulence or ability to switch species is highly likely.
As to answer why these things always seem to originate from Asia... well, it's simply untrue. There had been two major influenza epidemics in the last century and they both happened in the west. One happened during the First World War and the other named the Spanish Flu. And in addition to this, the Black Plague (caused by the bacteria Yestinia pestis also happened in Europe.
I'm sure Asia also had its fair share of endemics/ epidemics, my point is that diseases don't ALWAYS originate from Asia.
So will the Real Ignorant Fools please stand up!!! -

mad cow disease or Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) is cause by protein molecules called prions. don't think the americans started it. my point is people don't start diseases... pathogens have a life of their own, though prions are not strictly living things, they are the cause of the disease and appears to be able to transmit itself. and btw, BSE first came into the limelight in the UK.
This disease is(was) prevalent in cannibalistic tribes who feasted on the brains of their dead tribesmen and catch the disease from there.
It is believed that BSE is the result of feeding cacasses of dead animals to live stocks (cattles) and passing on the prions. As many believe that this is against the natural order (cattles are herbivous and thus shouldn't eat animal remains), that it is a disease to punish the offenders... but the poor cows have to suffer...
