look like a bunch of green bananas at first glance
Nope, you're not mistaken! You're perfectly right.Originally posted by Kuali Baba:It's the heart inside this bulb which is eaten.
Or am I mistaken?
I do go for the more vegetables option frequently and don't mind paying extra for the veges too! When eating the Sam Lo Yu Peen Hor (Cantonese for that White Hor Fun with Fish Slice and a Mountain of Bean Sprouts atop a Banana Leaf dish), I would often ask them to add $1 more kai lan, which adds up to a mega-huge serving of veges for the day!Originally posted by Kuali Baba:How many of us go for the 'more vegetables' option at the hawker centre? Not me... though I often ask for less gravy or lard.
Hmm... when eating out, one can end up choosing healthier options, if only one knows how to. I guess kids have to be taught to choose more nutritious foods but really, it's the example parents set at home and the 'normal' everyday diet the parents give to the kids that will truly educate them re. their meal choices.Originally posted by Kuali Baba:I guess in a way, our kids are lucky that they get variety at the canteen...but it's useless if the dishes they order have too little fibre and too much salt. And a fair number of foods are processed, such as sausages, hash browns, fries, and luncheon/spam.
You didn't know? They're termed "GMF" - Genetically Modified Foods, and they've been on our shelves for ages now!Originally posted by shinta:whats all that gm thing?
dun tell me i've been eating those altered stuff or what nots.... for the past 21 years
vegetables are yummy! i eat almost all of them... not so much for shrooms tho... a few pieces and i'm done.
Oh yes, they would! But don't overcook them!Originally posted by shinta:i wonder if asparagus boiled in salted water would taste good...
they could be a snack in the office
The only time i ask for more is when i want $4 hokkien mee instead of $3, or more meat, or one more bowl of riceOriginally posted by Rhonda:I do go for the more vegetables option frequently and don't mind paying extra for the veges too! I love love love my vegetables!
Eh... how do hawkers cut and cook their veggies that's different from how it's done at home?Originally posted by laurence82:The only time i ask for more is when i want $4 hokkien mee instead of $3, or more meat, or one more bowl of rice
Hmm, never mroe veggies, because i dont like how hawkers cut and cook their veggies
well, for one, they are usually those bland plastic hydrophony or aerophony stuffOriginally posted by Rhonda:Eh... how do hawkers cut and cook their veggies that's different from how it's done at home?
I totally agree! I used to flick off the worms and caterpillars on the chai sim that grandma brings home from the market when I was a kiddo. Used to play with them too!Originally posted by choco B:Worms with vegetables are a good sign. Shows that less pesticides are used i.e. organic. Depends how you interpret it I guess.
Aaahhh... ok, I see what you mean now!Originally posted by laurence82:well, for one, they are usually those bland plastic hydrophony or aerophony stuff
i am talking about those big green leafy ones, not those like kangkong
most of the time they are not cooked well, i see some of them, they just scald it quickly in hot boiling water
i am particular abt how veggies are cut, since my mum taught me how to, that bits of stem near the roots are usually thrown away, but hawkers dont, and soem veggies, if i rem, u dont usually eat the stem
my mum usually know how to cook veggies with other stuff, some dab of oysters, slices of meat, garlic, onions etc etc its the combi
but most just serve veggies just like that.veggies
i would cut the root of the bean sprouts awayOriginally posted by Rhonda:Aaahhh... ok, I see what you mean now!
And also, there are hawkers who don't remove the roots from their beansprouts before cooking them! But actually, I've eaten it and surprise!... you don't die from eating them!

my grandma use her one stop solution to everything..human pooOriginally posted by the Bear:for those who grow plants in the house and actually bother to remove the roots from the bean sprouts...
blend the roots with some water and use the water on your plants.. the roots contain some kinda plant growth thingy like a hormone which will make your plants grow a lot better
Erm... you can't get bird flu from eating chicken meat.Originally posted by choco B:Speaking of healthy food, my mom has banned chicken meat in the household due to bird flu. They've resorted to eating frog meat now.
