SINGAPORE : A construction company and its project director have been fined for an accident in June in which a worker died.
Chiu Teng Enterprises was fined S$42,000, while the project manager was fined S$20,000.
The court heard that during the construction of residential flats, a worker was about to pour some cement.
To do so, he stood in a cage attached to a cement hopper, which was hoisted by crane to the 7th floor.
In the process, the cage hit a bar, was dislodged and fell to the ground.
The worker inside the cage was killed as a result of the fall.
The Manpower Ministry's investigations showed the project manager had initiated the use of the cage, despite being cautioned by the company's safety officer not to do so without approval.
Calling it an inappropriate and highly dangerous practice, the ministry said the correct procedure would have been to erect a properly designed elevated work platform. - CNA /ct

This is how firms cut costs to meet the lowest bid requirement for most projects. And the workers usually pay the price.
