Actually, the agency is not absolved of all responsibilities either - they should have conducted more stringent background checks and all that.

How could agencies have stocks of 'brides'?
I REFER to the report on the 'Bishan cobbler and the Vietnamese bride' saga (ST, Nov 23). It is sad that women continue to be abused and traded like commodities but what is shocking is that it is happening on our home turf.
What laws are there to ensure we don't end up as a 'cattle-trading ranch', much as we are against being a drug transit station? Could the authorities throw some light as to how a man could walk into a matchmaking agency and pick a bride, just like that?
The laws against molestation and rape are harsh. Is this case any different to deserve a lesser punishment, irrespective of the nationality of the victim?
Matchmaking agencies which represent these young, uneducated women must also be held responsible for their plights. How is it possible for the agencies to have 'stocks' of brides-to-be that one could walk in and pick one, much like picking a pair of socks?

I can't shake off the impression that those vietnamnese girls who came here willingly that comes to Singapore are here for the money and a singaporean passport. I don't believe in 'love at first sight' rubbish thing and its even harder for me to believe that the young girl loves the 64 year old man at first sight, considering his age. If the girl really did love him i would feel sorry for her, but if shes just another money- grabber out for the man's money, well -
