About a few years ago, I was happily keeping my REALLY expensive pet rabbit when I spy a computer shop near my house selling hamsters. Yup, I dont know why they started selling hammies but heck, I got curious and walked in.Originally posted by ppinkpponk:how it that possible?
I got immediately attracted to a single lone pretty female hamster in a cage. The rest of the hamsters were all bunched together in a big family in 2 or 3 separated cages. When I inquired the shop owner why the poor hamster was all alone by herself, he told me that this was an especially aggressive hamster.
I peeked at her and she gazed at me with huge adoring black eyes. I was hooked and sadden by her plight. I thought she was this poor lil' cute thing that was sadly misunderstood. I brought her home.
She was such a tiny thing, being a dwarf hamster and all. Nice smooth fur and she climbed trustingly into my hands whenever I reached for her. I introduced her to my pet rabbit and they seem fine. At that time, I thought it was kinda cute to put a hamster and a rabbit together in a cage. I mean, my worry then was that the rabbit might step on the lil' thing and kill it or something...I was sadly mistaken.
The very next day, I found my rabbit lying dead at a corner of the cage with its right hind leg chewed off. I was pretty horrified to say the least. I couldnt believe my eyes. I mean, CHEWED, you know ? God knows what kind of diet this hamster's on. >_<"
Anyway, sad and angry, I returned the stupid hamster to its own cage and what do you know ? The smart aleck made it way outta the cage somehow and escaped. I wasnt that concerned and I believe justice had been served.
That night, my cat had a smile on its face. -

I so believe that killer hamster story. They may look tiny and cute, but hamsters are evil. They bite, they stink, and they gnaw on the cage bars making horrid grating metallic noises the whole night.

i used to have a few hamsters. the female ate her "husband" and her baby.

ferret, i think you'll be better off with chincillas...don't think they're vicious at all.
Speaking of pets, my neighbour has asked me to foster a kitten which she'd rescued for 2 wks while she goes on vacation....time to prepare the spare bedroom and cat-proof the furniture. -

With Chinchillas the first few days are critical as they do not adjust well to new environments. Keep them cool, make sure they have plenty of water, food, and leave them alone(but observe from distance) so that they can slowly adjust to their new environment. DO NOT, DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT, subject them to hysterical children during the intitial adjustment period. Or ever, actually. And please hor, when you bring your chinchilla home from the shop, please please please do not be cheapskate and take time wasting, noisy, public transport home. a taxi or car is a must. But once they've acclimatised to their new environment they're pretty low maintenance creatures. Oh, but be careful when you release them to let them roam around the house, they like to chew/nibble on things, including live wires. Be watchful if you do not want fried chinchilla.

hamster can really chew!!! our hamster chewed on the stand of the running wheel...and break it...
and one stupid sibling and the father chew on its baby sibling...makes us 'sick'...
that innocent, sweet, cute looking thing is scary monster.... 
anyway only allow my girl to keep just one now....don't want to see such incident again...yucks.... -

One more thing, buy the largest cage possible with ample space for it to exercise. And let it out at least twice a week. I've seen some poor fellas in cages with barely any space to move!
