One more thing, buy the largest cage possible with ample space for it to exercise. And let it out at least twice a week. I've seen some poor fellas in cages with barely any space to move!
It's very important to keep them cool (imagine wearing a thick fur coat), and turn on the aircon for them if nec. during really hot weather. They can be quite affectionate, once they get to know you.Originally posted by av98m:Someone did. The poor chinchilla died of fright/heat on the way home.

Actually hor.... I always wanted to keep a chinchilla coz I think they are so adorable.Originally posted by av98m:Actually as long as the room is airy and cool its okay to do without the aircon after they get used to it. Mine gets to enjoy aircon only once in a while, if weather is really hot.
Stink, no. They are extremely clean creatures and their droppings are dry and hard with no smell. Can pick up with your hand even. They're like small dry pellets. You know how hamster cage will smell after about a week? No smell with chinchillas! Much much better than hamsters!Originally posted by elindra:Actually hor.... But the thing is I dunno how to look after one so I keep putting it off and I dunno if I have the time for it coz a fluffy pet usually requires more attention than fishes and turtles.
Other thing is I'm not sure if it will chew my wooden furniture and stink up the place
From my friend's chins, I don't think they chew or stink, coz what comes out from them is dry. They're quite sweet and even I, a stranger, can carry them and play with them, and they're happy to be handfed with their favourite straw...and they love raisins (but it's sweet, so cannot feed too much). My friends wanted to pass the offsprings to me but I didn't take them. They have no complaints about the chins either.Originally posted by elindra:Actually hor.... Ok, this is a good enough reason for my husband to start putting up protest signs all over the house with NO to chinchillas on it.Originally posted by av98m:Chew up your furniture? Well yes. My furniture looks fine at eye level but when you examine the legs, there's 6 years worth of chew marks on them.

Its not fiction. This really happened.Originally posted by choco B:I so believe that killer hamster story. They may look tiny and cute, but hamsters are evil. They bite, they stink, and they gnaw on the cage bars making horrid grating metallic noises the whole night.
Dont really like em'. Good for their fur though. Heard its expensive. LOL.Originally posted by Wanda:ferret, i think you'll be better off with chincillas...don't think they're vicious at all.
Speaking of pets, my neighbour has asked me to foster a kitten which she'd rescued for 2 wks while she goes on vacation....time to prepare the spare bedroom and cat-proof the furniture.

Actually, hamsters look like the baby rats that prawl my neighbourhood at night.Originally posted by choco B:I believe you! Hamsters are feral, will never keep them as pets
Oh no! Call the PETA police! How abt ferret fur?Originally posted by Ferret:Dont really like em'. Good for their fur though. Heard its expensive. LOL.
Well, I sure am not gonna have lots of scratching posts around the flat since I'm only fostering for 2 wks! This guy is a kitten, so may need more attention and training. The last ill cat I fostered was an adult and was once a house cat, so he was a breeze to so-called 'customise' ....oh and he loves to bump head with us.Originally posted by Rhonda:Wanda, with my cats, whenever I caught them scratching the furniture, I'll drag them to their scratching posts. I never had much problems with their scratching. I made sure they had plenty of scratching posts around the house.
