Well, then don't call the stuff 'paella' otherwise, it'll be blasphemous!Originally posted by elindra:But you don't really want to pay for saffron all the time you know

One reason for the high cost is that manual labour has to be used in picking the flowers and the stalks of saffron. A book on herbs and spices mentioned that saffron costs 10x the cost of vanilla....not that I know the cost of vanilla.Originally posted by Kuali Baba:The reason why saffron is so expensive is because you need thousands of flowers just to make a few grams of it.
I think they are expensive too. Look out for the vanilla pods in Cold StorageOriginally posted by Wanda:One reason for the high cost is that manual labour has to be used in picking the flowers and the stalks of saffron. You never learnt to make rock buns in home econs meh? Thot that was the de facto baking item and uses vanilla essence...which was also used in other baked items.Originally posted by elindra:My home econs cooking are usually all local dishes
Learnt the other dishes on my own
Plus I remembered I hated my home econs teacher so I never paid attention in class
No leh. Was some cakes and stuff but I didn't bother remembering coz I didn't think the recipe was that fantastic.Originally posted by Wanda:You never learnt to make rock buns in home econs meh? My teacher Ms Ong was very sweet and well-dressed, and she seemed to like me coz she gave me an extra custard tart which she'd made herself (the whole class only used jam on the tarts). But I didn't like the housework and sewing part by other teachers. The things they made us sew all cannot be worn one.
Those sewing class don't really teach us to sew lah...it's not as if we can even sew a pair of shorts! Maybe sew square or rectangular items like hanky only...but then who uses hanky now?Originally posted by elindra:Sewing class I can't sew....my SO always complains if I even took home e before coz he sews better than me
They make you sew ugly things that I think aunties won't even wear
Err mine was more complicated leh. We have to sew things like baby clothes etc I couldn't do it and in the end my mum ended up doing my homework assignmentOriginally posted by Wanda:Those sewing class don't really teach us to sew lah...it's not as if we can even sew a pair of shorts! In my class, we even had those manual sewing machines which req you to use your right hand to turn a lever round and round in order to propel the wheel to work the machine, leaving only your left hand to hold the fabric. It was a culture shock to me coz my aunts are dressmakers and both were already using electric sewing machines.

If you're referring to the electric sewing machines, it's like what we have nowadays - using one foot to step on a brick-sized box, like stepping on the car accelerator.Originally posted by choco B:?!
With the pedals that you gotta work ??

The pedal ones use manual power.
