It is easy to make... But you must get the correct rice flour...Originally posted by Wanda:I used to roll them for my mum...easy to make, then add lots of ginger, pandan leaf and brown sugar to the starch soup.
Grandma used to make tang yuen with me being assigned to roll up the balls, mostly to keep nosey, kay-poh li'l me outta her way! I often tailed grandma when she cooks in the kitchen and very often, when she turned around, I'd walk right into her or she'd step on my feet!Originally posted by sbst275:Yeap, it is today... She finally deployed her delegation skills to assign me kitchen tasks! Let's see, I was rolling those balls for her when I was in kindergarten! Guai guai diam diam sit there, rolling the balls earnestly like my life depended on how perfectly round they were!
I remembered the lovely smells of pandan leaves and ginger together with brown sugar, wafting in the kitchen as I sat there rolling the balls.
I was usually not guai guai diam diam for too long because I always had questions to bug ah ma with!
''Ah ma!! An zua dio bi yi yi eh?'' (Grandma! Why must the balls be round?)
''Ah ma!! An zua buay sai long zong bo xiang dua ah?'' (Grandma! Why can't the balls be of different sizes?)
Needless to say, a harried ah ma would yell, ''Geen nah pi, diam diam cho! Ko chut xia di mai cho! Jib ki bang keng koon!!''
(Kids should be seen, not heard so keep quiet and just continue with your work! If not, I shall lock you in the bedroom!)
Now they even sell the rice flour which are pre-mixed and pre-dyed with the red colouring. So u just need to go home and roll them into little balls.Originally posted by sbst275:It is easy to make... But you must get the correct rice flour...

Well, certain jobs are like this... The worst is such ppl that in the workplace bully the newcomers, I believe they should be made to change job and treated in the same mannerOriginally posted by Rhonda:
I've been pretty miserable since they posted me to my new workplace a few months back!
I've asked for a transfer back to my old ward, but I've been flatly refused.
This rotation thing is causing tremendous unhappiness amongst us. Of course, on paper, it sounds good - job rotation, exposure to different areas, skills picked up, yada-yada...
BUT, they've forgotten the human factors like our individual career plans, our interest areas, and most importantly, our friends.
When you've worked in an area long enough, people start to accept you, you forge friendships, you know the system well. I miss my old colleagues.
Most importantly, I'm at the stage where I'm waiting to make my exit. I DO NOT relish new challenges now. I did try to be positive and tell myself that it's a learning experience, and I did learn quite a few things here, but the people here are mostly pretty nasty and sarcastic and I don't fit in. I do have a few new friends - and one of them almost made me cry when she said that she wanted to yell at the others to ''SHUT UP!! Leave her alone!!'' when she overheard them b!tching about me. So touched that she stood up for me! I told her not to though, cause I'm strong enough to take the wolves coming after me, but I don't want her to be chased down by the same wolves because of me.
I really really almost cried when she said, ''Y'know, I think you're very brave and I admire your courage for standing up to them and going into their midst to work with them despite seeing how nasty they are to you, and how they've ganged up against you.''
Nursing here is like that. Each time you enter a new work area, they'll tekan you and sabo you, throwing insults endlessly at you and all that, until they're convinced you can work and / or they've grown to accept you over time.
Nasty. We weren't ever so brutal to newcomers in my old corporate jobs. In fact, we welcomed newcomers and only kept our distance AFTER some misdeed was committed... welcomed unless proven suspicious / unworthy... not the other way round - attacked unless proven worthy.
Sorry I haven't been online much lately... been trying to seek that little sliver of sunshine slicing through the dark clouds.
Sounds like your need to head over here to Australia - even Melbourne lol- sooner than later.Originally posted by Rhonda:Sorry... I had a really bad time at work.
I was sent to work in an area I was not confident in because I'm not familiar there. But I'm the most 'junior' so although I've voiced out my apprehensions several times, it's gone unheeded. I've even kpkb about it once, when I felt it was the last straw then... but now, they're doing it all over again.
Something bad happened on my second day there. I turned up for work with a very bad migraine but it's hard to take MC during this period cause it'll invite a lot of gossips and displeasure. As it is, we're already very understaffed.
So, in the mad hurry to get things done, and in my hazy and pained state, I committed errors.
Don't worry... 'tis not that bad cause no one was endangered. But it could have been a potentially grave error.
I hate it when they overwork us, and then when things inevitably happen, we get all the blame! I've told them months ago and time and again that I CANNOT work there!
In the old days, grandma would take our her large enamel tray with a huge carp painted in the middle. She'd throw the flour in it and you won't be able to see the carp anymore.Originally posted by sbst275:Nah

Little me would know it's about done when the dough she kneaded lifted off the sides of the trays and you slowly catch glimpses of the carp.
When you can finally see the carp in its entirety cause the dough has picked up almost all of the flour, THAT's when I knew it was time for me to roll-roll the balls!

Yeah I didn't know today is the "Tung Yuan" festival till I received an sms greeting from a friend. Not eaten those plain ones I ate when I was a kid. Used to tell my mum that I only want the pink ones
sbst, the thing is, they HAD been treated very badly themselves when they first joined the ward.Originally posted by sbst275:Well, certain jobs are like this... ... Everyone has forgotten
Those pink ones? Simple, add food colour dye powder
Actually how you treat ppl, next time that's the way they treat newbies...Originally posted by Rhonda:sbst, the thing is, they HAD been treated very badly themselves when they first joined the ward.
And that is why now, a few of them take it upon themselves to ensure that the newbies' lives are miserable.
But then again, there are a few tender-hearted ones who've cried tears over being bullied and sabotaged and ostracised, and they are now very kind, gentle, and sensitive to the newbies.
One thing I've learnt, be nice to newbies. Newbies may not know much at the beginning, but they'll pick up fast. Don't be so fast to condemn someone and spread gossips too... different folks adjust differently and each has different strengths too.
