I was talking about "the pot calling the kettle black". Then you guys came and talked about all other things and hijacked my thread. So ruuuuude! You all must be Singaporeans right? Just kidding, just kidding....yeah, seriously, I know what you guys talked about were all related to my thread.
I just logged on to check my busines e-mails and to see how popular my thread was. Actually, I have a lot of things to add, but I didn't fly 1200 km to logon.
Don't worry, I'll behave myself. The country's reputation is safe with me. If I do decided to talk loudly or torture a few tortoises at Chaktuchak, I'll make sure no one is looking first.
Later guys and girls, later....

I used that KNN and CCB very often when I am in foreign land. I enjoy using that to some white cunts and give them a smile. e.g. Just tell them they are KNN, bow and smile. They will smile back at you too... isnt that fun???Originally posted by HENG@:lemmie see.... I was at Euro Disneyland in Paris this summer... and out of the blue I heard "chao C*** B***!!!"
instantly I know there were singaporeans behind me. turned around, viola. 3 or 4 early 20s singaporean guys there
You know, I've noticed that our local censorship authorities are far more concerned about dialects and singlish than they are about vulgarities. It almost seems that as long as its in an american or scottish accent, its okay! Just look at our TV programming, big fuss kicked over use of singlish in local sitcoms yet the american sitcoms, with their really bad english and all, get a free pass! And our esteemed PM's message to teach our kids to speak english using hip hop! Wtf? I really dislike this SPG-like mentality.Originally posted by Gazelle:as for CB, it is just as "good" as MotherF**ker, Asshole, B.itch, bastards, son of a gun and all that american slang. However why is it that CB or KNN always get condemn and not the american slang? Double standard?
As for singaporean being loud, I personally thinks that american speak very loud too, especially when using their mobile phone. why double standard? Is it because english speaking countries are more superior?
really? why are people in Perth more laid back that people in Sydney? Why are new yorkers more uptight and blunt than those in the midwest?Originally posted by the Bear:never ever blame society when the responsibility is personal...
that's a copout...
exactly. it is like saying that english's fart smells better than the asian's breath.Originally posted by av98m:You know, I've noticed that our local censorship authorities are far more concerned about dialects and singlish than they are about vulgarities. I think they have a point actually ... it's not the Singaporean accent, but our sometimes questionable English ... you have to admit that some Singaporean chaps don't really know the rudiments of grammer ... and I suppose some Singaporean themselves confuse good English with having an accent ... I threw up a thread at the SO forum about some African bro I met speaking with a Singlish like accent, and sad to say, I think his grammer and his diction is a lot better than some Singaporean's ...Originally posted by av98m:You know, I've noticed that our local censorship authorities are far more concerned about dialects and singlish than they are about vulgarities. I have met quite a few americans who cant read too.Originally posted by av98m:I can hear plenty of bad grammar in american and british programmes. And quite a few expats I've met are bloody incoherent when they speak as well!
I agree .... some of those chappies don't know grammer either ... but that doesn't mean we don't have to strive towards good English (that doesn't mean we have to ape the accent) ... Seriously, I think many Singaporeans are in a linguistic limbo ... many of us suck in our mother tongue ... and we can't truly say we speak good english either ... bilingualism used to be our greatest asset ... now this quasi-bilingualism risk being our greatest handicap ...Originally posted by av98m:I can hear plenty of bad grammar in american and british programmes. It is still our asset, the only problem is english speaking Singaporeans are overly critical about other singaporeans speaking Singlish. Do you need to speak perfect English to selling char kway tiao? obviously not. Would you want to sell char kway tiao, when you can easily get a job in a MNC? obviously not too.Originally posted by Fatum:I agree .... some of those chappies don't know grammer either ... but that doesn't mean we don't have to strive towards good English (that doesn't mean we have to ape the accent) ... i agree. while personal responsibility is, well, personal, a person's personal mentality is shaped thru social conditioning. Even the influences from his friends and family are affected by social conditioning because his friends and family will also be influenced by society.Originally posted by Meia Gisborn:Even if some of the responsibility is personal, you cannot deny that society plays a significant role in shaping a person's behaviour.
Besides, who sets the standard for what is considered an 'acceptable' level of courtesy? The family?
heh my friend went to the STA office at Imperial College to get a european mainland train pass. After queueing for half an hour, he got to the front only to be told he needed to bring his passport along. He said "cheeeee byeeeee" and the lady at the counter asked him what that meant. he smiled n said :Originally posted by Gazelle:I used that KNN and CCB very often when I am in foreign land. lets just say i can understand people in central london. move me to essex(which technically is still part of London), and i understand nought.Originally posted by av98m:I can hear plenty of bad grammar in american and british programmes. Quite frankly I don't see why Singlish has to be killed. Most people who are sound of mind will not use it in formal writing or discourse anyway. We speak our own brand of colloquial english, just like people in other countries. But we know when to switch to standard english depending on the situation. There are a gazillion regional accents and colloquialisms in other countries from various ethnic groups and cultures. Why do we have to kill part of our own local culture and identity to cater to foreigners?
its amazing but i think we always expect the americans n the brits to be able to speak perfect english. but as with every language, it needs to be learned to be spoken well, and just as with every race of people, there will be those whose aptitude for language is lesser than others, and there will be the lazy bums who just have no interest in learning a language well, so of course there will be the illiterates.Originally posted by Gazelle:I have met quite a few americans who cant read too.
In terms of loud, you can't beat the Chinese. Anyway, the brits have perfected polite contempt to a fine art.Originally posted by HENG@:heh my friend went to the STA office at Imperial College to get a european mainland train pass. seriously i think its no point insulting someone when they don't get the insult. and if u think americans are loud, u ain't heard the greeks and italians yet. Thats why I don't like them too much either.
not all brits. The posh ones perhaps. maybe the butler who remarks on one being a "nincompoop"Originally posted by lwflee:In terms of loud, you can't beat the Chinese. Anyway, the brits have perfected polite contempt to a fine art.
Ladies too ! .....Originally posted by runervn:Ok, just an experience I want to share with you guys on how loud and *dumb* a Singaporean can get when they're outside their country:
When I was visiting some friends in Dubai, we went to this nice mall (Mercado Mall). We went to look for a free parking space just beside the mall. Of course, you should follow where the arrow points so that you'll know what's the direction of the traffic. When we were almost going inside this vacant parking space, all of the sudden, we saw a car speeding "directly coming in front of us and *against the direction of the arrow - which simply means they on the wrong side of the road". 2 ladies went down, around their mid-20's. *SHOUTING* (In Singlish) "We found that space first!". We tried to be calm, explained to them that even though they just came from the entrance of the parking space and the parking space is near that area....You're still using the wrong direction.
Worse came to worse.... They shouted "K.N.N.", (I felt really funny when they're shouting those words at people who naturally know what it meant)... Anyway, we just ignored them and left our car, they weren't happy and shouted "CCB!".
Worse came to worse, I was pissed off. My friends stopped me from attacking those original CCB's! But, after I explained to them what it means, they agreed to join the fun!
At the end, I told those gals not to show how stupid & dumb they are in other countries. People might think Singaporeans are really that way.
That really ruined our day. And brought back an interesting story to my folks back home.
...............Isn't that loud?...................
