Doing okay thus far. You must be pretty excited about your impending departure--how are preparations for that coming along?Originally posted by Rhonda:MG!!! Good to see ya! How are you?
Well, two out of 10 ... and the two had to return because of obligations to fulfill, who knows what they'll do after their bonds are up?!
That's scary... majority of those who plan on migrating are brainy, well-qualified folks.
And yes, the local press would never report on this, just like they skirt a lot of other issues.
I heard staggering figures from my friend, who has connections, but of course, I can't announce it in here in case they kick my door down the very next second!

WE know about nurses and their calling to service..Did you pursue it because it was a career or a calling like Florence Nightingale? Or because it was just to hop on to a rice bowl for survive? I must confess, I've been thinking about packing up and moving elsewhere for a simpler life in a less crowded and less stressful environment. As the years go by I find that this place just drives me nuts, mainly the overcrowded conditions.
And really, I think I'd like being a fruitpicker.
If you're willing to give up some luxuries and lead a simple life a fruitpicker's salary might be sufficient!Originally posted by elindra:
Haha that is what I told SO
You support me and I'll relax and enjoy nature as a fruitpicker
I got a knock on my head for saying that

Errm... you get all these when working in Australia, tooOriginally posted by Mao x 2:Yeah... I would rather migrate to Australia and open a hotdog stall by the beach. I'm sick of this place.. Salary sucks, office politics, backstabbing, blood sucking government, etc..
yea man and my lecturer is an aussie!Originally posted by charlize:If I am not mistaken, Australia currently wants craftsmen and not degree holders to apply for aussie citizenship.
There is a demand for people like carpenters, plumbers, mechanics etc.
Those people with ITE certs should go take up the opportunity and start a brand new life overseas.
Aussies is quite friendly wat, can see that frm my lecturer.Originally posted by SydneyLibrarian:Isn't this funny... we were gathering with some friends tonight & talking about the exact same topic! Hubby & I migrated to Sydney quite recently; what attracted us to move here included:
- Got relatives in Australia
- Close enough to Singapore so can travel to & fro quite easily, compared to if we were to migrate to other countries (e.g. US, UK)
- We like the more relaxed lifestyle here, and also being able to knock off from work on time is a BIG plus; we have enough time to enjoy our private life, not like in Sg when working hours tend to 'eat' into one's private life.
- Being a permanent resident / citizen of Australia, we are more or less 'guaranteed' that we can use the medical system when we need to, and not pay a hefty sum like in Singapore hospitals; all we need is private health insurance which is relatively cheap
- Property is cheaper than in Singapore (some more, house and land are yours forever, not like for 99 or 999 yrs!)
- Same as the above, where cars are concerned
- People are generally more tolerant & friendly.
Negatives include:
- Cost of living is more expensive than in Singapore.
- We find it hard to be good friends with the Aussies (could be cultural barriers? Can mix well with them lah, but just cannot be goody-goody, buddy pals like we had in Sg)
- Miss our family & friends!
Errm can't think of any more reasons, if/when I do, I'll add them in!
Friendly, yes, without a doubt, most of them can b friendly if they want to.Originally posted by FBI:Aussies is quite friendly wat, can see that frm my lecturer.
Got that before lah ....They also said I cannot work anywhere else if I break my bond and said I had no money to pay up such a HUGE sum. Then she shut up when my father came by and talk to the hospital CEO who was his former classmate to give them the bond in bank draft . Suddenly everything is ok ...everything is good.....all the best in your career ...if you want to come back to this hospital ....please do so. ....you are always welcome. And letter drafted in 1 hour. How to beat that?Originally posted by Rhonda:elindra, you won't imagine how dirty the HR is... I've heard accounts of them trying to get payments for stockings that were given to an employee three months before she quit, and how they hounded ex-employees for some crazy medical bill payments that they're entitled to, etc etc!
Now, if you approach them for a Certification Letter stating that you're employed by them, etc, they will insist that you tell them WHO the letter's for! That's because the Ward Sisters complain about the HR knowing before them that employees are about to quit so they want to make it difficult for us to apply for work elsewhere! WTF!!! I shouted at them, that it's their job to give me certification letters and they can jolly well churn a ''To Whom It May Concern'' letter for me cause it's none of their business what I do with my life cause I'm only working for them, not enslaved to them!
There are so many atrocities re. the way they treat the local and foreign staff... little wonder that most of us are leaving, or are contemplating leaving, or if they have no choice cause of family commitments, they get demoralised.
To solve the drain, they make it harder for people to leave instead of improving our work conditions so that no one wants to leave! Thwarted, it's all thwarted!! Where did these people learn management?!!
So, instead of motivating their workforce, they want to make it tough for disgruntled employees to leave. So what if they stay... do you think the low morale won't affect their job performance?
The wonders of 'lateral thinking'. They don't just 'think out of the box'... they think on an entirely different and irrelevant dimension altogether!

That's so narrow-minded... just like proclaiming that ALL cities are the same. Not all nurses can be saints ...and not all saints are nurses either.
Nursing is a job - some people may enjoy it and some may not, just like any other career. Nightingale was subservient enough to put a freakin pledge to tie nurses to a handmaiden role BUT she was brave enough to talk back to the medical officer regarding sanitation of the makeshift hospitals during the crimean wars . Yet she did not encourage her own nurses to think for themselves , like she did when the medical officer refuse to listen to her - she basically F**ked up the whole nursing profession by being a hypocrite.
Australia taxation rate is 27% if you fill in your tax file number and it is the only job u claim the first 6k off . First 6k is non taxable . If you got HECs ( subsidised government fund for education) ,then it may blow up to 40% but otherwise no. 27% goes into medicare ( healthcare - free hospitalisations etc and subsidy for meds) , centerlink ( if you need the dole) , and other infrastructures of Australia.
