It is, I mean your thread title. I have a sad tale in my family too, or specifically my hubby's family and it is still in progress, if I may use this term for lack of a better phrase.
I don't even know where to begin but from one tragedy, it lead to the death of another. A young and unexpected death. 
And from that, two kids are left "homeless". So many lives have changed.
As a parent, my heart will ache for your friend's parents. It will and is very painful. I hope your friend can find strength and with God's mercy and grace, a recovery.
I will include him in my prayers.
Anyway we are visiting him as much as we can since he is out of coma and intensive care. -

My family doctor passed away. At least there's no more pain and no more frustration in heaven. -
I've had the interesting experience of witnessing a family cutting off a male relative from their lives when he contracted Aids.
There were no visits, no calls, just some interest and concern from afar, though I'm not sure if that's entirely good-willed or plain kaypohness. They were quite a close-knit family before this.
It was discovered that the guy contracted it from paid sex, though not sure if he had a regular habit for it. So his family had the attitude of "he brought it on himself", "he's a bad person", and basically abandoned him.
On the day of his cremation, his wife turned up in a black outfit - black tight capri pants and a fitting, somewhat revealing tank top - not exactly conventional attire for a widow at her husband's funeral. I've always wondered what she thought about the whole thing. Maybe she felt she had something to prove. -
It'll shock you how many HIV carriers or AIDS patients are actually married men who visited prostitutes.
When I have to nurse such patients, I'm just numb. I only feel concern for their wives and children. It's heartbreaking to talk to their wives and when they open up to you, they'll start crying and feeling angry at their husbands for bringing this upon the family.
The wives are often fearful of contracting HIV from their husbands but more often than not, their main worries are for their children.
These irresponsible men!!
They aren't fit to be heads of households! -

So there is indeed hope for your friend. It will be difficult to adjust, if indeed he is a parapelgic, but it is still possible to live a full life as one. There is always a situation that is worse, not much comfort i uderstand, but i believe the problem he will face is one of acceptance,anger and guilt.
From experience i find that anger and guilt is the hardest to handle, i have had clients whom had lost their sight and still after many years are very angry, making the next phase of their recovery very difficult.
I have no one to whom to pray to, but as a fellow human being wish him well -

I dont think you would shock many with such a statement. However HIV is commonly contracted thru "affairs" where there is more of a likely hood for unprotected sex. looking at the number of sick f*cks who often post topics like "see racequeen/classmate/colleague zao gene", I'd say so. If they treasured life one little bit u'd think they would take the time to be more of a gentlemen, or even just be decent instead of being perverts, but no.
