aiyah, same theory different application, gahmen say must be creative mahOriginally posted by Rhonda:Yet another fanciful thingamajig! Congratulations... you have the potential to be a successful Consultant!
So, with this new 'theory' of yours, you have completely negated and disproved your previous 'theory'??
hair can be said to be fins so actually can be said with hair u lose heat faster also....but cos hair dun stick straightout so oh wellOriginally posted by sherling22:the heat transfer coefficient, h, is not the same for hairy and hairless humans with the latter having a higher value, thus hairless humans loses heat faster by natural convection.
the formula for Qconv is for heat transfer between the topmost layer of the skin to the environment. we have to consider how does heat gets propagated from inner body to the topmost layer of the skin. this is significant here becos a fat person generally have more and bigger fat cells. fat cells besides containing fat, they consists mostly water. since water has a high specific heat capacity, it retains heat well. therefore, a fat person can "trap" heat better than a thin person under the assumption that both have the same metabolism. consequently, when they are under a hot sun, the fat person is less efficient in dissipating heat than the thin person, and hence will feel hotter.

Oh, dug up some more facts about DIETARY FAT in another mag, "Good Housekeeping", August 2003 :
[b]"Without fat, you couldn't absorb vitamins A, D, E and K, which need dietary fat to propel them through the walls of your digestive tract and into your bloodstream. Fat is also a key source of two fatty acids that are vital for your health. And fat is a beauty essential - it keeps your nails, skin and hair from drying out."

yep, if the hair is straight, we can treat it as cooling fins like the fins on the computer processorOriginally posted by chunyong:hair can be said to be fins so actually can be said with hair u lose heat faster also....but cos hair dun stick straightout so oh well
also depends on race lah, cos Indians chest more hairy !Originally posted by sherling22:yep, if the hair is straight, we can treat it as cooling fins like the fins on the computer processor
but if the hair is curly, it traps air, thus retards natural convection
nel can't stand the cold... and his metabolism rate is much higher than mine...Originally posted by Rhonda:One's ability to tolerate cold temperatures not just depends on one's layer of 'insulation', it also depends on one's metabolic rate - the higher the metabolic rate, the warmer one would feel.
Usually, individuls with high metabolic rates are thin because they burn up calories much faster. Therefore, that's why it's possible for thin people to feel warmer than fatter ones.
