Well, Singapore hopes to increase its own population to 7 or 8 million in a few more decades. But unlike our neighbour, we don't have the luxury of too much free space.Originally posted by elindra:Actually can you imagine how their roads will be like with 70 million people The jams are already bad ....but with 70 mil
Maybe they should just consider building a better public transport network in KL like what Bangkok did instead of harping on that dumb bridge
Than we will be like HongKong and live in cubiclesOriginally posted by charlize:Well, Singapore hopes to increase its own population to 7 or 8 million in a few more decades. But unlike our neighbour, we don't have the luxury of too much free space.

more likely you'll be out playing most of the time, like many tokyoites now ... cos your pigeon hole will be so small as to be claustrophobic ...Originally posted by av98m:I suspect that I'll be hiding at home most of the time if we ever reach that stage. Its bad enough now!

Next time, there will be ERP like charges for people who want to use the parks or enter Orchard Road.
Yes, I am talking about people. Not ERP for cars.
Bigger population implies more tax revenue and such.Originally posted by Rhonda:What's the point of increasing population if the government cannot ensure the following :
- Subsidised education for all. And that a decent, minimal level of education is attained for all;
- Increased productivity, leading to a better, more robust economy. Higher population does not equate to higher productivity. It could in fact, drain the economy of resources;
- Traffic, like elindra mentioned. Helloooo traffic congestions and road rage!
- Good infrastructure and amenities for all citizens;
etc etc.
It's just going to turn out to be a royal nightmare if this issue isn't broached carefully, adequate resources channelled, and appropriate establishment of necessary infrastructure to support this population growth.

I reckon ministers' pay will increase further in the next decade or so because they need more incentives to "manage" a larger population.
