You won't know everything about everything. It's good to have self-confidence but sometimes, one is just clueless and at a loss. Sometimes, one might need some help and advice and reading self-help books from people who are experienced and who might have gone through the same situation might help.
Self-help books help to explain things and situations to people. And in extreme cases where deep emotional trauma is being experienced, eg. death of a loved one, going through a divorce, aftermath of physical abuse, etc. it might help to read self-help books from counsellors or even from people who were once victims themselves but have since crawled out of the abyss. This can supplement the counselling sessions one might, or might not have.
Those "How to..." books can be very indispensible at times. -

Hiya, Twice A Day! Welcome to Club 30! Over here, we TRY to hold interesting discussions and hold flame wars at bay, although the odd clown or sleazebag would make their way in here now and then!
Ah... Tuesdays with Morrie, an excellent book! IMO, I'd call it a 'modern classic' because I'm sure it'll withstand the ravages of time and the finicky preferences of the modern-day readers. It's an extremely profound book, and not one to read when you're taking public transport because ... pai seh... I had to fight back tears once when I was reading it on a crowded train! 
Have you read Morrie Schwartz' next book, "Five People You'll Meet in Heaven"? It's a pretty entertaining book and as usual, it has morals behind the tales. I happen to catch the short movie for it in the Hallmark channel too!

coolger, I read this book by Anita Shreve, ''The Last Time They Met'', which made me cry a lot at the end. It was an extremely powerful book. I recommended it to one of my friends and she didn't quite get it and she didn't enjoy it at all as a result, but hopefully, you will!

i was looking for Teng Jing Shu's books, and so i went to search under 'TGJS' but I found nothing.. then i realize.. they arrange the books according to title!!!

tales of the otori trilogy from lian hern also not bad. fictioinal story bout fuedal japan. luv the way the author describes everythg. makes really beautiful pictures in yr head. -
