Eh... I don't know why... maybe the baby hamster died a long time ago and is no longer 'fresh' liao?Originally posted by shinta:qn for the experts.
the female hammie just gave birth ytd..
what are some of the important stuff to take note of?
they're dwarf hammies...
one of the babies died last night... instead of the mother eating the bb up... she brought all the babies from the top to the bottom of teh cage.. including the dead one. she would bring the dead one down... and chuck the dead one at one side... not eating it up.. nor burying it. (she did bury the dead one when they were upstairs..)
why ar?
1 say the mommy is too dumb. the other say the mommy is a vegetarian

no.. cos i heard mama hammies will eat dead babies..Originally posted by elindra:Erhmmm shinta...why do you want to see the hamster eat it's dead baby?
Do you have some weird fetish that we are not aware off?
Well I wouldn't even leave the baby there for the mama hamster to eat in the first place Would just remove it immediatelyOriginally posted by shinta:no.. cos i heard mama hammies will eat dead babies..
den if she isn gg to eat.. den we wanna take out the dead baby... before it starts... er... stinking the place?
well we saw how the mother carried the baby everywhere with the rest of the babies.. we tot maybe the mother didn noe her baby's dead yet..Originally posted by elindra:Well I wouldn't even leave the baby there for the mama hamster to eat in the first place Would just remove it immediately
the female hamster seems not aggressive at all, totally different from what i've read so far...Originally posted by the Bear:when a hamster gives birth, put a LOT of food and a LOT of water in the cage, put the cage in a quiet corner of the house and cover the cage with a cloth to keep the cage dark...
that way, the mother will feel secure... and will not eat the babies..
also, if possible, try to give in the food, higher protein stuff..
the male's out already... cos they were fighting...Originally posted by the Bear:oh yah. remove the male hamster from the cage
and the dead one too

she'd disturb the male hammie... push him or sth... den she go grab her food... den when the male one is up... he'd chase her every where tryin to find any opportunity to hump her..
we dumped loads of food in, those gua zi.. some kinda melon seed or sth... and some carrots and some other stuff we bought from pet shops... loads of water as well..
what do we do with the dead one? my mom thinks its squashed... to death.. nel thinks it didn get to feed thats why it died...
it's in a very weird position... the limbs are facing up
i dun dare to touch. maybe make my brother take it out..Originally posted by browniebaobao:
I din read the whole thread..
shinta, the hamster gave birth har? and u all still put the male in the cage?
male should be shifted out of the cafe. Keep only the female and the babies inside.
Like what Bear said.. put lots of food and water, dun disturb them.. wrap a cloth around the cage. Dun go and peek la.. wait till babies open eyes le then it's safe.
bo bian but to throw away the dead one, if not it will rot.

cos the mother put them next to each other...
no wonder he keep tryin to hump her..
I've read it's best to keep the father in the cage with the mother. My advice: take him out as soon as she starts looking fat. He will probably eat the babies, not care for them. Some fathers do help raise the babies and take care of mom, but to be on the safe side, take him out. Also, the moment after the mother gives birth, she goes into heat. The male WILL mate with her and she will become pregnant again and deliver in 18 days. That is another reason why I recommend separating him. This gives her time to rest between litters.
and one more thing.. avoid letting ple born in yr of tiger to look or touch the hamsters.. if not the mother will eat up the babies.. u may think it's superstition, but it happens.Originally posted by shinta:if like this.. i let mama do the dirty job.. her hands more steady than us...
my bro can't hold the chopsticks properly
sekali they've taken care of the body liao
