i think the mother smells that they are "not hers" or something... usually happens when someone goes and touches the pups or handles them... imparting the human smell onto the pups..
they will be rejected by the mom..
which is why the covering of the cage for some time, and fighting the urge to go look and touch them, is very important..
hope the mother realises her mistake but i don't see that happening.. once they're rejected, it's too late

If mom seems to ignore the missing pup for more than 30 minutes, itÂ’s time to help. Do not pick the pup up with your hand. Instead, get a spoon and rub the bowl of it in the cage litter. Then scoop the pup up and move it closer to the nest. Sometimes itÂ’s best to drop the pup on top of the nest if itÂ’s completely covered. There is a small chance that the pup was deliberately expelled. This sometimes happens but not often. You might find the same pup out of the nest again. DonÂ’t stress your hamster but keep trying. Eventually, the pup will either be accepted or die. There may be a problem with that pup that only a mother hamster could detect.
nope didn clean the cage..Originally posted by the Bear:yeah.. i hope so.. the wiping with the litter is to mask the smell.. and using a spoon also..
i hope you have NOT been cleaning the cage around this time...
when there are pups, never ever clean the cage no matter how smelly it gets
impart the smell of the hamster to the spoon so they hamster won't be scared.Originally posted by shinta:nope didn clean the cage..
told them repeatedly not to touch..
argh!!!!
and what doe wiping with the litter mean?
it's true. cos i am a tiger myself. it's really sad for me not to have a close look at hammie babies.Originally posted by shinta:i think its superstition..

i heard dat one of the reason the mum ate up the babies is due to they r exhausted after giving birth n they need to relieve their protein back.Originally posted by the Bear:sadly, i think they're doomed...

of the 2 expelled... 1 is accepted i think.. the mother no longer throws babies out...
think they're startin to grow fur liao
one of the webbies say... i can start to handle them after they open their eyes and start exploring the place..Originally posted by the Bear:good good!
once they are weaned, you can start to handle them.. but be careful of the mother.. she may still bite as she may still be protective of them...
good luck!
mom says no to gettin them meat... said sth about them gettin aggressive after taking meat related stuff...Originally posted by the Bear:yes.. only when they start walking around and can eat solid food...
they're dwarf hamsters right? if so, they'll be about the size of a 50 cent coin then...
in the meantime, see if you can get a bit of egg white for the mother.. it helps.. protein
