Before I became a Nurse, I was in the corporate rat race. My last job was with an American MNC in a fast-paced industry and I found myself waking up at 6am every morning to leave the house before 6:35am to catch the company bus to work. Work starts at 7:30am officially and it's supposed to end at 5:30pm but if I even step out of the office at 6pm, my boss would exclaim, "Har?! Going home SO EARLY today?!"

We usually worked till past 9:30pm there. I have been stuck at work till past 11:30pm too. I heard the 'record' there was held by this poor colleague in Accounts who stayed till close to 5am, rushed home for a shower and change of clothes, then returned back to work after a short nap!

I saw a lot of people burn out and break down in that job. Adults, literally breaking down from sheer fatigue and crying away!

Turnover was extremely high. I mean, look at our crazy hours! It was officially a 5-day workweek BUT, I've NEVER worked just 5 days because on Saturdays and Sundays, we either had to return to the office or bring the work home!

I never got to see the sun most days cause I'd be up before the sun rises and returned home way too late.
I finally quit that job after about a year because my health started to suffer and I became very burnt out.

For a long time afterwards, the sheer idea of hard work or OT made me shudder with sheer terror!

Sadly, the job situation here seems to be getting worse, with freshly graduated young adults finding that they might have a job, but they're being worked to the bone.
