Some General Information
Common Name: Freshwater Stonefish/Lionfish/Toadfish/Frogfish
Scientific Name: Batrachus trispinosus
Distribution: N.W. Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, New Guinea
Diet: Likes Fish, especially live fish
Temperament: .....it's a predator! What do you think? They are supposed to be nocturnal.
Tankmates: Seems that they are best alone with same species but I should think that it should be fine with something it can't eat and will not try eating it.
Other Comments: Please note that these are venomeous so do not try touching them.Freshwater stonefish skulk 98% of the time. In some cases they get behind bulky objects in their tank. In others, they wedge themselves into a corner or cave. Big guys sometimes just loaf on the bottom looking like a big lumpy stone. Thus the name. Upon occasion your freshwater stonefish will stomp around on his specialized fins. HeÂ’s about as graceful as a toad.

Yikes... I think their saltwater cousins are much prettier...
Anyway if they are anything like the marine frogfishes, they seldom swim, but ambulate by 'walking' around the seabed with their pectoral fins (those under their bellies).
And it's very interesting to watch them suck their live prey into their enormous mouths. -

Too bad AVA no longer allow amphibians to be sold as pets

Simi weird pets. Some pets I keep are so called 'normal' ok. I used to have a canary, 4 dogs, 2 rabbits, 2 hammies, 2 3' tanks of fishes, 2 salamanders, 2 tree frogs, 2 puddle frogs, 1 RES, 1 soft shell turtleOriginally posted by av98m:You have a long history of keeping weird pets I see.

Those AVA folks banned the import and sale of several species of pets (especially aquatic) in 2005. For instance now, the only species of tortoise that can be legally sold is the red-ear slider. Sorry to spoil this thread. I'm in Shenzhen (China) now and just took these photos at a nearby supermart (sorry for the resolution, they were taken by handphone).

Some tanks were so crowded and when fishes capsized, they couldn't get up again!
I saw something similar in Bejing 3 weeks ago, but my handphone was with the Singapore traffic police, and my digicam was with my wife....so I couldn't get any photos. -

If you look up CITES they are not listed there
The reason I think AVA banned some animals because alot of people do not know how to care for them and they end up releasing them into the wild which is cruel and upsets the ecosystem
Actually I think they would have banned the Red Eared sliders if they can but those come from America and we have this free trade thingy with them.
I do agree for stuff like the star tortise and soon to be threatened PNT though. Softshell there is only one variety that is threatened but not the ones sold. -

i wonder sometimes about pet owners... the canal at the back of my office doesn't have the cute little mudskippers anymore... people have been dumping their luo han into drains..
they've reverted back to their cichlid shapes and living in the canal now.. it's brackish water and they're actually doing well..
i wager they've eaten the local mudskippers or bullied them until they've all left
