  Speaking of natto. Japanese TV is full of the funny, weird and the strange. We once watched a show where one of the challenges was to see who could get the longest "string" of natto. They had 3 people in this challenge. Each guy took turns standing on a forklift-like platform, holding a pair of chopsticks with some natto. One guy had an unbroken "string" 10 meters long!

  there are a few clips on google video about the insane japanese game shows...
  
  there was one where ladies wore a pork chop on their foreheads, stuck their heads through a hole in a platform.. the last one out won..
  
  of course... they released a monitor lizard onto the platform

  To tell you the truth, I didn't really like life in Japan. But I love the food though. It kept me sane.

  oh.. i remember one Iron Chef episode had the fellas grab this huge wriggling octopus from the tank

  My student tried to give me some horse meat. She went home to Kyushu for a visit (delicacy there) and brought some back with her. Good thing she's very Westernised so I didn't have to be pai-seh with her at all. But I've eaten raw crab before. Nice!
