There's also a study that says there is absolutely no emotional joy whatsoever in a sexual act just as a fulfillment of physical needs. But do most people care? I doubt.
Perhaps women are on this uncertain quest every single time they sleep with someone new - and feign nonchalance and indifference to mask their emotional craving to protect themselves. Maybe men are too - but choose to emotionally detach themselves for fear of being hurt if they let on more than they should.
It's all a matter of personal perception, really. -

what seperates crude coitus from love making is precisely the emotional element .... I no longer find any joys in one night stands .... I wonder if it's just grouwing up from a pubescent mindset towards sex, but perhaps fulfilling this physical need is no longer satisfactory in itself ? ....
perhaps getting "laid" is sort of an affirmation for guys .... and affirmation of their musculinity and attractiveness .... but once you know you can get it easily (relatively speaking) ... that in itself is nothing eh ... I dunno ... I like to think I prefer "making love" than "making sex" now ....

Perhaps the clear distinction is how many times round the block (so to speak) you've been... I suppose when one has 'been there, and done that' the thrill would cease to exist.
As we age - we are more exposed to the many different types of people there are in the world, and we become more discerning. (I'm refraining from using the word 'picky' here, cos that would be just wrong). The questions posed by our naturally inquisitive nature would probably have been answered as well.
Teens or 'young people' may approach a situation with the intention of getting somewhere - but I believe with the older generation... it will be done (if at all) with a form of mutual understanding in place.
