I do technical sales, have seen very experienced managers doing their sales pitch and in their daily interaction, believe you me, knowing the customer is more important than the product. Sales people who purely do sales only on the other hand knows nuts about the product they are selling. sometimes customers ask them questions they don't even know how to answer.
Further, you can learn a product, if you have the basic training and assuming you have the normal intelligence and good attitude. But sales skills, that is a tough one.
