  Chevron Corp., the No. 2 U.S. oil company, posted a sharp rise in quarterly profit Friday, boosted by a strong surge in crude oil prices.
  
  Net income in the first quarter increased to $4 billion, or $1.80 a share, from $2.7 billion, or $1.28, in the year-earlier period.
