Genuine questions... or just attention w****s?

Have you ever come across a question in a forum, and wondered why in google's name he/she doesn't just do some quick research on their own?
I mean, they are on an internet forum, so presumably fairly internet savvy, at least savvy enough to use a search engine, don't you think? Or in the case of personal issues, why seek the advice of complete strangers, who more often than not dispense advice that even your enemies wouldn't dare dream of?
Why, I wonder.
There may be a few reasons why the habitual-forum-nonsensical-question-poser does so, apart from maybe the blatant fact that attention does a world of good for one's ego. If they can't readily obtain it IRL, mayhaps the vast cyberspace is the next best thing.
1. The person actually knows all about the subject, and is looking for an entry point to show everyone how much they know.
You know the type. Ask a question and then argue with the people that answer. This annoys me because it is a form of attacking well meaning people who are just trying to help.
2. Person knows full well how to get the information they need, but by thinking and asking the question, they will look Â’knowledgeableÂ’ in some ways.
For example - "Anyone know how I can surprise my girlfriend with a gift that she's always wanted?"
Translated, this reads "Hey... guess what,? I'm flushed with cash - enough to buy the girl a 7ct diamond ring! Other girls can eat their heart out and just HOPE..."
3. In the case of personal matters, the person invariably knows what must be done, but needs the backup and approval of others before they can go ahead and act, so that if it doesn't go the way they hope it will, the complete burden of failure doesn't fall solely on one's lap.
"My boyfriend shot my brother, raped my mother and fed my cat to the dog. Should I dump him?"
4 pages and 60-odd replies later, people are still discussing how best to kill the non-existent dude.
Ah... the internet. Faceless names hiding gleefully behind the secure anonymity of the screen. It's rapidly becoming a facet of life that we cannot simply choose to ignore, so much so that Google becomes the ultimate answer to everything.
If all else fails, there's always SgForums.

baby, i think some of them are just... dumb..
others want to seek attention, but i wager if they're dumb enough to ask stupid questions where people are just frustrated with them, and will end up being pissed off with them, they also fall into the "dumb" category
besides, if these people didn't exist, there won't be shows like Jerry Springer -

u just need discussion or seek some advice to deal with personal matters u really dunno how to deal with, some personal matters u feel really paiseh or really hard to discuss with friends in real life becomes easy in forums cos of anonymity, there's just some things that are easier to say it out without face to face.

Yeah... think sometimes people are just clueless. Something which may seem apparent to us.. (i.e. monster boyfriend and mr hyde girlfriend) just seems to elude them somehow. Or rather, they know the answer, but they need affirmation and encouragement to do the extra step. A lot of us have friends that provide this support and affirmation but some don't. Therefore you have Aunt Agony.
Me.. neh.. just lazy. I think there are lots of people here with lots of knowledge abt lots of things. And I would just post a question here and hope someone can save me the time looking thru the internet for it. -
sometimes it is easier to ask random strangers for advice...not that its the best idea nor will you get the best answers.
but for certain things, its not so easy to talk about it face to face with someone... -
I think for certain topics, it is just to get a nagging issue out of your system? You're not really looking for answers for it but to just blurt it out and forget about it.
You know it can be something stupid which you have the solution but you just want to say it

A lot of times, when people appear to ask 'stupid' questions, it's not that they do not know the answers themselves, but that they are human and fallible, and either need to know that there's some soul out there who empathises and can put a virtual arm around their shoulders and give them some pal-ly pep talk.
We aren't all strong all of the time. Sometimes, we have our weak moments and we stumble and look for acceptance, and seek approval and validation. I do that sometimes - ask stupid questions when I'm feeling lonely / fearful / insecure.
But then again, if the questions were asked not for empathy but because of sheer ignorance and cluelessness, then, I rest my case!
And oh, for certain things, it's useful to count on the experience of others, and this you cannot Google. It can range from trivial questions like, "Which restaurant serves better food?" or "Which model of handbag is sturdier?" to the more 'serious' questions like, "Which poly is the best for ABC course?" If you seek the opinions of others who have gone through similar experiences or who know of friends or relatives who have, you certainly can't google it. And I do not belittle sources like that because sometimes, you can get valuable information this way. -

LOL this is funny.
Interesting how you can see these forums as more that people asking stupid questions and having idle chat to pass the time while at work or time at home.
I realy do not believe that people ask questions here worryng about how intelligent they come across, lol if they did these forums would be dead.
And yes lol i am guilty of asking rather than just going to look up in google for an answer... cause it is more fun to get response from real people and there are a few intelligent people that may know or understand what i am thinking.

The reason I stayed away for almost a year when I first joined was because the newest topics stuff had mostly threads from BAR.
I mean, seriously - I don't think I can help much if anyone's P-nus turns green. -

First one was because it contains something I saw on the MRT that should be in Bar.
2nd one because of the visually explicit graphics in the quiz so I posted that in bar too
3rd it is a damn article off the internet, which seems out of place anywhere else
So is it hard to believe when I say that? I do go to Bar to have a good laugh at times? It's like after a hard day's work and you want some no brainer stuff to laugh at.
But, I will not retract what I said that you really need to leave your intelligence behind if you want to enter Bar. -
