Songs used to be so simple then.
Almost every song relates to a personal experience, and regardless of the genre - was straightforward, with identifiable lyrics. There's just something about oldies that makes them live throughout the ages, and the recent revival of some songs which were hits way back then and become hits again re-released by modern artists, proves just that.
Remember "Tell Laura (I love her)?" that's a song that always strikes a chord in me. It reminds me to always tell someone whom I care about how I feel as and when - for the next moment may be too late. And "Can't Take My Eyes (Off You)"... catchy tune, catchy lyrics, yet oh-so-simple.
That's probably the beauty of oldies.
It sees music as a form of entertainment - rather than a means to prove a point, or as a mode of 'release'. It's honest, and speak to the hearts of many. It's simple, and reminds people of their own life's experiences.
The Swing and Big Band Era churned out classics by Count Basie, Glenn Miller and Benny Carter. Revived jazz hits by Harry Connick Jr. and Bryan Evans, to name just a couple - became hits again in this day and age. Their appeal, perhaps, will never wane.
What are some of your favourite oldies? Or perhaps songs that are of significance to you? I'm sure all of us have a favourite or two.

hmm.. looking at my collection of music stuff, i seem to listen to everything, from Miles Davis and Coltrane, to the silliness (i don't understand German anyway) of Rammstein..
i guess the few things i don't listen to are the nonsensical "gangsta rap" they have these days... which are far and away from the originators NWA... who told it like it was in all its graphic horror and never glorifying the lifestyles of the inner city gangs, and not today's glorification of "guns, gangbangers and 'hos".. granted there are a few good ones out there, but maybe it's just too much for me..
the diversity of stuff i listen to, has also allowed me to not try to compartmentalise what i listen to.. i'm just as happy singing along to Jamie Cullum's new effort (i love the song Photograph) or belting out Evenflow by Pearl Jam... to screaming along with Trent Reznor.. or just listening in silent contemplation of the words of Sarah McLachlan...
more stuff i listen to come from strange places... like after watching the anime movie of Cowboy Bebop, a song amazed me so much that i sought it out and ended up parting $70 for a Japanese import of the soundtrack.. the song, btw, is Gotta Knock A Little Harder by The Seatbelts featuring Mai Yamane from the Yoko Kanno Group...
from within that album, i was amazed to find out that Yoko Kanno did all kinds of music.. and that album, in fact, the whole series of music from that anime series, was breathtaking...
so, i'll listen to a lot of stuff.. as long as it's from the heart (you will know if you listen to it rather than just hear it), you will enjoy the music

Thats' true, different music speaks at different times. It's been said that when you're in love, suddenly all the love songs seem to make sense.
When we're out of it - it may make more sense to NOT listen to them.
Or at least yodel along to "Love Hurts". -
maybe not so across the board coz i rarely listen to pop music

Nat Cole's "When I Fall In Love" brings a lump to my throat...
Matt Monro's "Portrait of My Love" is something i would sing to Mrs Bear
The Mama's and The Papa's "Dream A Little Dream Of Me" is something to serenade someone to sleep to.. Mama Cass did an excellent job with this song..
John Denver's "Perhaps Love" invokes the beautiful and comforting visions of love, and the last line.. "if i should live forever, and all my dreams come true, my memories of love will be of you"
Gershwin's "Someone To Watch Over Me" by Ella Fitzgerald... now.. if Mrs Bear sang that for me, i'd be hers.. unquestioningly and forever
Bob Dylan's "Forever Young" is a song every man should sing to his baby son... "may you grow up to be righteous, may you grow up to be true, may you always know the truth and see the lights surrounding you"

I love the Carpenters, the Bee Gees (I don't really take to their disco hits though), Nat King Cole, Sergio Mendes...
'Sometimes When We Touch' has (pun intended) touching lyrics...
'Bridge Over Trouble Water' and 'That's Amore' are alright...
'Fever', 'Dream A Little Dream' or 'Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps', anyone? They're sexy. The Beautiful South did a nice cover of 'Dream A Little Dream' for the movie 'French Kiss'. -
