for now, i really want this!
Imagine having an entirely self contained eco-system in the palm of your hand. Well, now you can! Developed through the same research done by NASA on human biospheres, the BeachWorld is a self-contained biosphere.
It is completely sealed from the rest of us and needs no maintenance (save periodic sunlight). It sure beats keeping a fishtank which requires regular feeding and cleaning, doesnÂ’t it? Moreover, the creatures living in the sphere - freshwater amphipod shrimp (Opae'ula), algae and micro-algae - typically have a lifespan of 3-5 years, but have been known to live for as long as 12 years. These rare creatures can only be found living on certain islands lava rock pools.
The Opae'ula are literally the gardeners of their environment, maintaining the balance within the pools, keeping them clean so that the large algae can thrive. In your Beach World you can see the Opae'ula grazing and grooming themselves and even carrying the odd piece of sand! If the shrimps are disturbed they tend to temporarily lose their bright red colour in an attempt to blend in with their background. Once they have settled, they will turn red again.
