these statistic are just not accurate enough to reflect a true image.
Eg Less is spent on transport in some countries but as reflected,these people in other countries actually have higher wages so these other people may just spend less % of their wages on transport and better off than people who spend less on transport but the % is higher and thus overall has less to spend on other stuff.Now that give a better picture.
comparing figure by figure by itself is useless statistic,and the singapore govt often use this form of useless comparison to decide if people can afford certain prices of stuff,what saying transport price in other country is lower so justify rising fares
,but not saying that wages in these other countries are also higher...... -

Purchasing Power. Look at the purchasing power stats. ie. buying a standard basket of goods needed for living that Singaporeans have compared with workers in other countries. -

Take for example from what is shown here,we know that Tokyo is the most or at least one of the most expensive places (according the general item prices) in live in the world right? but look singaporean's purchasing power is actually much lower than tokyo.Tokyo 's purchasing power according to the report is 64.1 while singapore's is only 37.2
Just shows that actually singapore is way more expensive place to live in,but hell the singapore govt will always just use norminal figures to say stuff are cheap here compared to other global prominent cities -

How do they determine that? Do they just look at the buying price or other factors like parking etc -
not many people know how to scrutinize all these statistics and understand them. so when some MP say based on the baseline year (maybe one of the boom years), our Cost of living is lower now and blah blah... its all relative.
All these numbers do not actually reflect reality, its an abstraction of reality. Mark Twain said: there are lies, there are lies and then there are statistics -

A much better measure will be to talk to people and keep your eyes open. -
