if u add in local bits that would be considered SinglishOriginally posted by the Bear:do we?
speaking proper english doesn't mean we throw away local bits like that
Not just that, somehow...Singaporean english tend to be sharper at every word ending in a sentence.Originally posted by valentinoo:if u add in local bits that would be considered Singlish
We're proud to mix these into our daily speech, yet be able to code-switch into Standard Singapore English when necessary. A global soul is one who can seamlessly switch between patois and lingua franca of wherever he resides or works in.Originally posted by valentinoo:haha i bet lots of Singaporeans try very very hard not to accidentally say out alamak, leh, lah, loh, walau etc in front of those ang moh
its the so called accent..singapore accent...neways i have british, canada colleagues who Think we speak funny...they dont like the way we sound...but who gives a damn with what they think...its what we think matters..we think we r the best...our english is the bombOriginally posted by viciouskitty74:Not just that, somehow...Singaporean english tend to be sharper at every word ending in a sentence.
I was able to distinguish a singaporean parent immediately by how they speak to their children at Disneyland, without any lah & meh.
Some singlish just help to soften the sentences when added at the end. Like the lah & meh & aiyoo.
When you do, intro her younger sister to meOriginally posted by the Bear:i just want a loving Mrs Bear
loll...thats so funnyOriginally posted by viciouskitty74:Errrmmm...was talking to my sis and that reminds me.
I was at Vegas having dinner when I see a punkish young lady. Those sort black spiked up hair, dark kohl eyes, dark lipstick and sleeveless tee kinda gal.
On her arm was tattooed big big these 2 chinese words. 'Nui Go' 'Female Dog'
Was discussing it with my sis and she explained, maybe that angmoh gal was trying to say that she is biaatch.
But somehow.....the angmohs didnt realise its actual translation just mean that. A Female Dog.
She could have saved the trouble and simply tatooed one word "Jian" which is chinese, could have meant 'Cheap' or 'Slutty' or 'biatchy'.
I was thinking she should have simply tattooed the word 'Er' which means nasty or fierce.

The Aussies don't understand your accent?Originally posted by Rhonda:I find myself having to speak slowly now. If I speak at the rate I used to in SG, I don't think the Aussies would comprehend me at all! They will 'liak bo kew'!
However, unconsciously, when I'm with colleagues who are Singaporeans or who have worked in SG hospitals before, the occasional 'alamak' / 'tidak apa' / other Malay terminologies creep into my conversation! One of my Filipino mates exclaimed, "Wah! So long haven't heard that word already!" when I first said "Alamak!" without realising it. Oddly though, I've only ever done that only when they are around.
Yup! You do!Originally posted by elindra:RHONDA!@!

I do? I just started watching this Korean drama and I don't think I look Korean at all
