actually, I wanted to open an account in singapore because the income from trading are taxed, and I can't open a tax-sheltered account here cos I'm not a canadian ... I figured it's a good way to build a nest egg and wifey fund for myself elsewhere ..

if there's CPF here I'd not have to fret about retirement investments so much ...
if ppl comes and look for me it means i need to burn CDs again...Originally posted by Fatum:that's good ... solitude is such a rare and precious thing ...
I prefer to be left alone at work ... cos when someone comes looking for me, it means
1. there's a bug
2. there's new work for me
Is there anything similar to CPF where you are? Australia has what we called superannuation fund.Originally posted by Fatum:you know, I never thought I'd say this ...

if u're in sg.... all ur money in cpf ordinary account goes to..
1. ur hdb flat
2. ur kids further edu (if its done locally)
3. other sort of investment that u might take up
so ur ordinary account got no money
only special account... but... by the time u're 55.. hw much do u actually have?
its a false sense of safety
Where are u located now? Canada?Originally posted by Fatum:you know ... I realized that it ain't that bad ...
cos:
yes, cars and houses are cheaper here, but it's relative, cos everything else is more expensive, taxes are so much higher, cost of living is a lot higher ...
in Singapore, if I was working, I can afford to eat lunch out everyday, here, even the managers tah bao sandwich from home ... if i eat lunch out every day I'll be broke ...
as for mortgages, you're paying money for the same length of time for a C$200000 house as you'd for a S$400000 flat ...
I was thinking the other day, my father is a teacher, not some tycoon biz man, but he could afford a house, a car, yearly vacations for the whole family, plus send me and my sis overseas for school ...
I know kids here with teacher parents who had to take out gov student loans for school ...
the only people who have it good are the welfare bums and junkies ..

Its awesome in theory. But in practice, most people empty their accounts paying for housing and as a result its quite useless for retirement. And don't get me started on the medisave/medishield thing.
It also punishes the low-income group(then again, all government policies seem to punish them the most)
I'm making it work for me by not using the ordinary account for housing and pushing most of it into the special account. So far I do not dare use it for investments.
well ... it does have it flaws ... but the idea is a pretty good one ...Originally posted by av98m:As shinta pointed out,

cos if you push the onus of retirement planning onto the public themselves, you'll end up with a higher public cost in the end ... retirees working the tables and counters at Mcdonalds is not an exclusively Singaporean phenomenon I've discovered ...
I think they perceive "national service" as two folded ...Originally posted by av98m:And singles usually pay more for housing than married couples because the mother CCB KNNBCCD gahmen discriminates against us!!
