In the suburb I am living in, we are supplied with 3 wheely bins - one for garden waste, domestic waste and recycling.
Domestic waste bin gets emptied every Tuesday while garden waste and recycle bin gets emptied alternate Tuesday.
For the recycle bin, we can put everything that is recyclable including papers, cardboard, plastic bottles with code 1, 2 and 3, cans (aluminium, foil, steel), milk cartons and glass bottles.
We do make full used of the recycle bin provided as I don't see the reasons not to. I can understand it will be more of a chore to do so in Singapore as you need to take them to special place or have to wait to be picked up by Karang Guni.
Apart from recycling, we also try to reduce the landfill waste by having a compose bin in our backyard. Basically, we just put in all the greeneries (like vegies) and fruits (including skins, seeds, etc) which have gone off in the compose bin and occasionally put some soil in it. The compose can then be used for growing things in the garden. Natural fertilisers.
