i would have thought your dad meant you were being bullied cos you were weak so you need to be stronger and kill/multilate/destroy some of them to scare them off?Originally posted by fudgester:I wanted to stand up to them, but my dad's frequent scoldings convinced me that I was indeed a weakling and deserved to be bullied.
He would say things like 'You know why you are being bullied? BECAUSE YOU ARE WEAK!!!!'
And the most painful thing he said to me after being bullied again was 'What's wrong with you? I'M UTTERLY ASHAMED OF YOU!'
I was more scared of my dad than of the bullies. His actions simply made me withdraw into my shell even further. If he was intending to use reverse psychology on me then I would say that it failed spectacularly.
If anything, I could have just as easily interpreted my dad's message as 'The bullies are greater than you are, so you might as well be one of them.'
If I were a Type-A personality, I would have interpreted it that way. And you wouldn't see me here - more likely I'd be rotting in some jail for rioting or assault.
I suppose one good thing came out of this - now I know how NOT to raise my kids.
That's what I said - perhaps he was using reverse psychology on me.Originally posted by hisoka:i would have thought your dad meant you were being bullied cos you were weak so you need to be stronger and kill/multilate/destroy some of them to scare them off?
but there are many other wrong ways too. but i guess it does better the odds
but it doesn't seem like reverse to me. he told you plain and simple. you are bullied because you are weak.Originally posted by fudgester:That's what I said - perhaps he was using reverse psychology on me.
But you can't really blame me for being unable to see it that way - reverse psychology is not a very simple concept for a six-year old to understand.
And like I said, I could have just as easily interpreted it the totally wrong way.
He scolded me with those words in harsh tones.Originally posted by hisoka:but it doesn't seem like reverse to me. he told you plain and simple. you are bullied because you are weak.

Hmmm.........the bullies in my school were the damned skinny type(I guess that was why they needed to hang together in larger groups). So I have no hang-ups about strength training.Originally posted by fudgester:Hmm... I guess not doing it alone may help.
But I think the biggest stumbling block would be my mini-phobia of strength training. It gives me bad memories of why I was picked on by the other kids at school by constantly reminding me of how physically weak I am.
And it brings back all the bad memories of my dad scolding me for being bullied - his reasoning being that it was all my fault for being a good target for bullies. It totally wrecked my self-confidence and my ability to interact well with others.
As you might guess, I didn't really have a very happy childhood.... it wasn't too long ago before I finally realised that my dad was wrong all the while.
Yeah I know, it all sounds a bit dumb... once I can get over this mental stumbling block of mine, half the battle would be won.

yupz pretty sad.Originally posted by av98m:On the subject of bullying, here's my rant of the day.
Many a time the schools are not tackling the problem seriously and instead burying their collective heads in the sand.
Report the fact that you are being bullied normally results in the teacher or discipline master ignoring you, punishing both you AND the bully, or just shrugging it off with the boys will be boys excuse.
I speak from personal experience and from the current feedback I've gotten, things have not changed.
