I was more scared of my dad than of the bullies. His actions simply made me withdraw into my shell even further. If he was intending to use reverse psychology on me then I would say that it failed spectacularly.
If anything, I could have just as easily interpreted my dad's message as 'The bullies are greater than you are, so you might as well be one of them.'
If I were a Type-A personality, I would have interpreted it that way. And you wouldn't see me here - more likely I'd be rotting in some jail for rioting or assault.
I suppose one good thing came out of this - now I know how NOT to raise my kids.
but there are many other wrong ways too. but i guess it does better the odds

But you can't really blame me for being unable to see it that way - reverse psychology is not a very simple concept for a six-year old to understand.
And like I said, I could have just as easily interpreted it the totally wrong way. -

well, now that you recognise that, it is time to let it go, let it be water under the bridge and be what you can...
now, if i was shackled by idiocies my folks told me, i'd be even more an emotional cripple than i am now
one day, i decided to just let it go.. in fact, recognising all that they have said and done isn't anything about me, but reflects badly on themselves, is liberating..
you learn to look at yourself and say "hey! i'm okay.. what the heck was that all about?"
and you also learn to take criticism which is deserving and become a better person..
all it is, and always will be, is an opportunity to grow.. mentally, psychically, spiritually, emotionally and eventually, you hope to be able to grow more as a human... and become more humane

But I think the biggest stumbling block would be my mini-phobia of strength training. It gives me bad memories of why I was picked on by the other kids at school by constantly reminding me of how physically weak I am.
And it brings back all the bad memories of my dad scolding me for being bullied - his reasoning being that it was all my fault for being a good target for bullies. It totally wrecked my self-confidence and my ability to interact well with others.
As you might guess, I didn't really have a very happy childhood.... it wasn't too long ago before I finally realised that my dad was wrong all the while.
Yeah I know, it all sounds a bit dumb... once I can get over this mental stumbling block of mine, half the battle would be won.
And I've learnt that being parents are not infallible. They are equally capable of sheer stupidity at times.
Go to your uni's gym and speak to the instructor or whoever is manning the place. He will be able to give you the proper instruction. (probably a range of back and arm exercises, like bent-over rows, pull-downs etc) -

Yeah I know... I've learnt that not everything that my dad ever taught me was right. In his eyes I was dumb and weak.... but now I know that the only really dumb and weak thing I ever did was to actually believe that.
I may be weak but damnit I'm a survivor.... I've survived all sorts of sh*t being tossed in my face and I'm still standing....
I may be slow to learn but I work hard at it... I'm not intelligent, never was, but I make up for it by working my ass off in whatever I do.... I'm not smart, but damnit, I do know how to learn. It took me years to learn that my dad was wrong, but I've learnt from the experience, and I resolve to raise my kids in a better way.
Oh well... I think I've had enough of slugging my dad in an online forum.
If you guys don't mind.... I'd like some time alone.

On the subject of bullying, here's my rant of the day.
Many a time the schools are not tackling the problem seriously and instead burying their collective heads in the sand.
Report the fact that you are being bullied normally results in the teacher or discipline master ignoring you, punishing both you AND the bully, or just shrugging it off with the boys will be boys excuse.
I speak from personal experience and from the current feedback I've gotten, things have not changed. -

should protect the poor kids by making the bullies suffer for their deeds
and very often its not just physical bullying which is easy to handle -

my fucking boss thinks she's infallable...
her fucking "interpretation" of the law is in her delusion only... and when i tell her, she doesn't even want to listen to anything and keeps interrupting...
shit.. i have to send a query to the prosecutor which is going to sound like we are total idiots.. because she has a lot of baggage from the past prosecutors, she's refusing to listen...
