What was the wattage of those that you've tried? There are some Black & Decker ones out there which seem powerful, but they cost as much as a small normal vacuum cleaner. -

handhelds, at least 7.2V but i'd rather get the 9.6V or higher... MORE POWER!

I cannot live without :
- an electric fan (the hot summer days and nights can be H-O-T here!)
- TV + DVD Player! (LS will be glad to know that I'm now a drama queen - not the Hong Kong dramas, cause they cost a bomb here, but the Korean ones, cause they are sooo cheap here! Yes, cheaper than in Singapore! 
)
- Washer and Dryer. I love clean linen!
When I get round to doing them...
- My telephone. My frequent calls to friends back home and new friends here save my sanity!
What I can live without :
- The PC!
- Mobile Phone - I've gone days without it, leaving it at home.
- The Iron. Lived for donkey months without an iron and only finally bought and used one in my 9th month here.
(The trick is, to hang up your clothes on clothes hangers to air-dry immediately after the washing's done or use the dryer and then quickly hang them up. And of course, only buy clothes in crease-free material!)
- Food Processor. Of course I'd love to have one but without one, I get by with all the slicing, dicing, grating, and mincing that has to be done.
- Microwave Oven. Want one, but haven't bought one yet. So far have made use of steaming or stir-frying and re-heating in the oven to heat stuff up.
- Hair Dryer. -

Can live without dishwasher; vacumn cleaner; oven; microwave; clothes dryer; sandwich maker; electrical hotplate & steamboat; 3 tier electrical steamers; deep fryer; juicer; big blenders; coffee maker; mincer/grinders; TV & DVD players.
in USA.
Still surviving w/o dishwasher, sandwich maker, electical hotplate & steamboat; juicer; TV & DVD players.
The family is getting a dishwasher soon. The old wan conked out. So did the range hood; its filled with yucky algae like black moss. So there should be a major kitchen renovation next year....my sister is insisting on it.
I am insisting on getting a deep fryer for the family.
And getting a hot steam misting machine for my room. I dont like waking up every morning with hard nose booggers in my nose. -

There is a product called a Turkey Fryer which alot of people here use for Thanksgiving. I have a portable convection oven which I love. Doesn't fry but roasts. You can bake cookies in it too. Great results with the chicken. Took only 45mins to roast a 5 pound chicken. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside.
