I got pretty decent grads during my studies in Canada that I got into an honours society, but then I realized that I was not eligible for 90% of the scholarships they offer ... cos I'm not Canadian ....
in Singapore, it's the other way around ... I feel like a whiner right now saying this, but what's the difference between a foreigner and a singaporean in singapore ? ...
they get the same CPF, the same scholarships (yeah, a PR can get top scholarships too !) ... the same benefits ... our tax payer dollars are subsidizing the foreigners to come to study, and later, those same foreigners are competing against us for jobs .... a masters grad from burma or india can live and save on 1600 a month, we can't ... and so wages get depressed ...
we get the same too ... just that we have to wear green and defend this piece of land for 2 years, and for 2 weeks each year till we're 45, ... this is not our holiday resort, or our sweatshop where we'll work hard and return home to retire rich ... this is our home .... heck ! .. we don't even get to vote most of the time ...
Might as well be a Singapore PR and go somewhere else
If I have a kid or kids I think I will really send them out of the country if I can afford it. I think alot of people are thinking about that -

Our gahmen still refuses to realise that this is in fact a major push factor for Singaporeans to either migrate, not have kids, or deliberately arrange for their wives to give birth overseas (I have friends in the US, Australia, and Canada who will be willing to let me and mrs av stay with them until she gives birth, if I ever get married ) -

I can accept that we may need some foreign talent where we have a lack of local talent.
But it seems to me that the government is overdoing it and offering massive subsidies to any Tom, D*ck, and Harry who claims to be a foreign talent.
Some of them are indeed geniuses.... but I can state for a fact that quite a number of them seem to be there to make up the numbers only. I know of a few who have sub-3.0 point averages.... foreign 'talents', huh?
Would it be too hard to impose some sort of conditions on them? Say, if they fail to get at least 3.5 for two subsequent semesters, their subsidies get withdrawn? If they are true talents, 3.5 is really not difficult for them to get.
It irks me that I have to take out 100% loans and have $25K worth of liabilities while my taxes pay for these 'sub-talent' to compete against me. -
