Lounge Suits in Singapore

I believe that a lounge suit is usually meant to consist of a jacket, pants and a shirt with a tie. Would it be appropriate to forgo the tie in our local context, say for a speech event?

It is getting extremely popular with caucasian expats to go around business meetings with jacket and no tie.

the idea of wearing a tie in such a hot country is funny, but it seems to be an idea based on social norms and conformity, as in, everyone thinks i should do it, even though i don't really like that idea, but nonetheless i should conform to what the group is thinking and do that. There was once a wit that says, if everyone in the world is blind, i won't waste money on branded clothings.

Frankly a tie is one of the most useless piece of clothing accesory you can think of.
It serves absolutely no bloody purpose.
It doesn't keep you warm.
It's not something that holds 2 things together.
If you look at it carefully, it reminds people of a hangman's noose.
And if you think more about the connotations of that piece of cloth hanging around your neck, you would be associating it more with a phallic symbol than a clothing accessory.
Go figure. -

But it really depends on the cut of the jacket too -
well ... me still thinks long sleeve shirt sans jacket and tie is good enough for nearly everywhere in singapore ...
it's the most sensible uniform for singapore's tropical heat ... -
Never EVER wear short sleeve shirt with tie... especially a checkered short sleeve shirt with a stripe tie.
