I really ain't asking for much. I'd wait on tables if I have to if the pay is reasonable enough. In fact, I'm thinking of checking out a few restaurants near Siglap Center later.Originally posted by elindra:Well fudge lie about yr qualifications

Ah... when you're new in a working environment, depending on the attitude of the staff there and the culture of the workplace, sometimes, there's this bullying mentality. It's kinda like they wanna suss you out and see what you're made of and to see if you can actually become 'one of us'.Originally posted by fudgester:I'm trying to look for a vacation job.
I'm not very particular about what kind of job it is, so long as the pay's reasonable (say, $5 an hour).
If all else fails, I'll just contact my former manager at Pan Pacific Hotel. Frankly speaking, the pay there is good ($6/hour + tips), but I've had some pretty bad experiences there.
Simply put, the Mats there (Malay ah bengs) can't seem to put up with a 'university boy' working there for a few weeks.

Heck, I once bought a couple of 'em for the last potluck at pinkybear's place.
if you're familiar with the people there, u can always ask em to make fresh one for you.Originally posted by viciouskitty74:Heres a tip about pratas.
Plain pratas are mostly made in advance and kept at the side of their flat plates.
Eggs, onions, cheese & so on pratas are made when you order. So its fresh.

Well, needless to say, I don't have a lot of street cred with Mats.Originally posted by Rhonda:Ah... when you're new in a working environment, depending on the attitude of the staff there and the culture of the workplace, sometimes, there's this bullying mentality. Maybe, that's what's happening to you. Ah well, the working world IS a jungle where the fittest survive and the rest kinda would have dug their own caves and burrows to retreat to when necessary.

yep, i can never understand why most of em choose to spend their time hanging around the void decks instead of studying too.Originally posted by fudgester:Well, needless to say, I don't have a lot of street cred with Mats.
And to be brutally frank... I really cannot identify myself very well with other Malays. It seems that the culture of the Mats and Minahs is the majority culture among the Malays, and it is not something that I can reconcile with very well.
I guess a lot of it has to do with the fact that I was the only non-Chinese in my class from Sec 3 till JC2. As a result most of my friends are Chinese.
Whatever the case, the bad experience I had was with the young Mats who see me as the oddball. Half of them are dropouts and such. So you can imagine that they see me as an outcast and not 'one of us'.
The older workers were far more supportive and advised me to not let those dumbasses put me down.
One of the older workers told me, 'Some of these guys have had pretty bad pasts... they get jealous at people who have actually made it far in life. As a result, they try to pull you down to your level. Don't let them put you down... these people smear the name of the Malays. Go forth, study hard, and bring honour to our race.'
And yeah... I'll follow his advice.
