Now, paying for a service, and then thanking the person when the service is given and appreciating them for what they have done, that's being gracious.
Just because you pay for your domestic help, just because you pay for your meal at the hawker centre, just because you pay for the goods you bought in a shophouse, does not mean that it absolves you of the necessity to be polite and gracious.
