oh dear, poor poor youOriginally posted by jetta:RE: Work schedule
When I got hired at a dept store, I indicated that I was only available for 20 hours a week, preferring the AM shift, working until 2pm whenever I'm scheduled to work.
Things were okay until my manager kept giving me more and more hours without asking. I'm at 28 hours a week now.
Just today, she asked me if I could open up my availability so that my co-workers can work the AM shift. While I understand that, it's not my problem but she's managed to make me feel guilty. She also asked if I could possibly work the closing shift when she needs me to. I really don't want to, besides, she's take a yard if you give an inch. I won't want to be back home at 945pm after my kids have already gone to bed.
I don't want to work longer hours because I want to be home when my kids get home from school. (I was a latchkey kid myself and really didn't like it.)
I'm going in tomorrow on my off day to talk to HR and see what they say. If we cannot come to a compromise, I'm prepared to quit.
Fan ah!!!!!!
When I was hired it was a a part-timer. Here, part-timers can pretty much dictate our hours which is why I will never go full-time. I've seen my co-workers be at the mercy of 11 hour days. I'm in direct sales so standing for long hours is really painful day after day.Originally posted by SydneyLibrarian:oh dear, poor poor you
Did you sign a contract that specifically said you are to work a 20-hr week only? How come your boss so like that....
Yes, do talk to the HR about this... quit if you must, this is not worth stressing about - the time you spend with your kids now is more important than this! You can apply for other jobs in future.... there'll always be work, but you can't reverse the time you didn't spend with your kids.
It's okay working there. The hubster and you share the same opinion about my manager taking advantage of me. The dept is shorthanded. So I'll stick to my guns but I'm prepared to walk. Thanks skid.Originally posted by skid:I'd hate to see you quit cos I know you like working there, but as you said they knew what you wanted from the start. Seems like maybe they're taking advantage of you. Stick by your guns and best of luck to you.
As a part-timer, I can refuse any schedule I'm not happy with. And right now, I'm not a happy camper. I'll let you know what happens in a couple of days.Originally posted by honeymouse:Since you're in the States, you've the privilege to negotiate with your employer. They are also obliged to stick to the original contract they offered you.
Have a chat with the HR and I am sure you'll get everything sorted out. Good luck!!
*sigh* I'm thinking the same skid. *sigh*Originally posted by skid:If your income isn't absolute necessary atm and they won't budge on the schedule they have in mind for you I think there's only one course of action to take.

During my interview, my manager asked me if there was a possibility of increasing my hours if asked. So far, I've said yes to her when she needed me. That's why I said, give an inch, give a yard.
You're right, this isn't worth stressing. So I'm looking forward to speaking with HR tomorrow. Thanks, SL.
For sure. BTW, did I tell you that I have a dental appointment tomorrow. I have 3 cavities which need attention. So can you imagine me with me swollen mouth talking to HR?Originally posted by SydneyLibrarian:All the best for tomorrow, jetta Let us know how things pan out.

You're laughing yourself.... how you expect me not to laugh?Originally posted by jetta:
Did I also tell you that my neighbour offered me a job?
Don't laugh ah. She works for a telephone dating service. If I accept, I get to work from home, filtering calls. Did I also tell you that they have two hotlines? One for gays and one for straight people?
Farnee hor? Can you imagine me filtering calls? My neighbour says she's been working with this company for 8 years and she's heard all sorts of perverted calls. Aiyoh! I don't know if my ears are prepared for this.Originally posted by SydneyLibrarian:You're laughing yourself.... how you expect me not to laugh?
