Hi Kopi (and other awesome photographers)!
I was asking who to ask for advice on photograhy and bear mentioned your name.
Need some advice on what to look out for when I look for wedding photographers. There are so many around and their price range from $400 to $3000. i see and see until i become very blur. really dun know wat i should be 'seeing'
Also my bridal studio package already has photograher included. But they say the person doing my bridal shoot will not be the same guy who do the actual day i think tat is a bit worrying cos if they give me a noob photographer then i will be so upset
also my wedding is like 1.5years away.. is it too soon to book a photographer?
hope you can give me some advice since your photograhy is very good

anyway, before i go for my jog. let me list down the possible selection process that i can think of.
1) most important, pick the one whose results you like the most.
2) check out how much they cost, what they offer and whether it meets your budget.
3) meet the photographer and see how comfortable you are with him/her.
just note that some have a really sweet tongue and they will say because its "that special day, and why should you save money on it?"
then the brides will get soft hearted and the rest is history.
i'm being practical by saying, afford what you can and what you're comfortable with. don't take a bloody loan, its pictures, not a friggin house.
but remember the chinese saying "yi fen qian, yi fen huo"
"pai de hao, jiu hao guo. pai bu hao, shui de cuo?"

oh and if u want the popular photographers, book them asap.
my advice, don't get photographers through your bridal studios. unless u feel like buying toto/4d. its a gamble.
slowly choose, slowly meet up. -
and whatver you do, dun get the ultra cheap student photographers at clubsnap ok
you won't like the results

bunch of people who swear to photography as an obsession but most are just gear wankers who don't know art if it came out and bit them on the ass
they're more interested in the tools than what the tools can do for them...

Apart from finding someone who can take good pictures, I find the following is also important:
- Make sure the photographer is easy to work with (you'll get an idea what sort of person he/she is like when talking to him/her). You don't want someone to ruin your big day or spoil your mood when you get someone whom you can't work well with.
- Find out what is included in the package (say your package is $3k, what exactly do you get out of it? how many photos, do you get the negative, etc. Nowadays most photographers use digital so probably have no negative. Sometimes it's better using the non-digital camera as photographers are more careful when taking shots. When using digital camera, they tend to just keep clicking away thinking they'll get at least one good one out of it.)
- Find out the paper they are using for the prints. Good quality paper makes a big difference.

Then visit a few photographers to look at their work. Bearing in mind that they will show you only their best works. Ask to view the recent works so that you can guage the quality.
Ask to view the albums they are offering. It is usually cheaper if you opt for slip-in albums instead of customised "coffee-table" versions.
Some prices quoted are only for services with no prints. So be sure to check.
Some photographers limit the number of assignments they take a year. These usually are very good, so it's good to start looking for them now. -
