Which Asian movies would you recommend?

OK, if you guys haven't watched 'The Host', a Korean movie that won rave reviews in other parts of the world, go catch it on DVD! Wink

I read about it in the papers here and was waiting for it to be screened here, but that didn't seem to happen. Razz

So I just HAD to get the DVD when I returned to Singapore.

It's really ... entertaining. It's a movie about a mutated monster living in the Han River that came about because of some toxic chemicals that were emptied into the river a few years ago. The monster eats humans! Shocked

Aiiieeeee!!!

However, this show doesn't end up a 'B' grade flick. The theme of family and human greatness is woven into the plot. Somehow, it was filmed so well that when the monster ran amok and starting to eat the crowd of humans trying to run away from it, you can feel the fear! Surprised

I'm not a good critique, but there's just something in this movie that appeals to me, and lots of other people around the world! Wink

Tetsuo - The Iron Man

it is a strange movie.. starts with some weird dude with some metal on his chin.. he pulls at it and realises it is growing from him..

then there is this weird fetishist who sticks a metal bar into his arm.. which causes him to stumble onto the road and is hit by the weird dude..

there, the nightmare of mutation, horror and violence begins...

good stuff.. will put cult leader's 'horror flicks' to shame.. Laughing

One of the highest grossing film of all time in taiwan, legend of the sacred stone is traditonal hand puppetry brought to another level with movie production techniques, hollywood special effects and digital sound production.

typical wu xia pian storyline but i bet you'll love the special effects in this movie which makes it even better than real life wu xia pian and puts team america world police to shame....

lousy script, pretty bad acting in the Singapore portion, and piss poor editing made the damned movie, especially in the last part, seem hurriedly chopped off.

I go look for Tetsuo and Legend of the ... whatever (recommended by Deathy) the next time I go to Melbourne City. Wink

I would've bought more Asian movies back but the price I would have paid for a VCD in Singapore is roughly the price I would be paying for the DVD here, and if they're having their sales, the DVD's are definitely much much cheaper than the VCD's in SG are. Razz

I've watched the rest of the movies you guys recommended. Shirin was really awesome! Very Happy

And Infernal Affairs was so good the Hollywood blokes bought the rights to make a Hollywood version of the movie starring Leonardo di Carprio, I think. What was it called? The Departed? Confused

Battle Royale I I enjoyed tremendously but I thought BR II sucked. Razz

It was too much of a military movie and didn't have the shocking horror element that BR I was so successful in portraying.

BTW, don't bother watching The Suicide Manual from Japan. Yucks! Razz

By contrast, The Suicide Club was more memorable and disturbing.

Story of Ricky. The violence and the amount of gore is so fake and over-the-top it's laughable. Not to mention the American version makes it even more funny with it's stupid english dubbing.

It's one of those unbelievable things that you have to see it once in your lifetime.

I personally recommend Windstruck. Korean movie that will make u cry buckets during the last 20-25mins of the movie. Everyone in the cinema was making the "sniffing" sound trying to miff their crying. Another movie that makes a lot of people reach for their Kleenex was Wait Until You're Older by Andy Lau. Funny at first, but later on, really make u think about ur own life, and how certain things shouldn't wait to be done/say before its too late.
