unhappy with your HDB? these are the boat people staying along the river in tonle sap - lake fresh, a fresh water lake. one such unit can sometime be a home to a family of as many as 17. -
the daughter of a boat peddler selling bananas. usually these people are too poor to send their children to school so they helped their parents peddling. life can be tough for the poor. sometimes they may have to wait for three days just to see the doctor only to be turn away if can cannot afford to be warded. treatment meant walking around outside the hospital with a stick holding an infusion pack. Cambodia is also facing the dengue fever with as many as 60 cases a day. -

Angkor Beer anyone? this little boys is shouting as their boat speed against ours trying to peddle their ware. -
who say moving house meant going into a new building. during the dry season, these boat houses are being towed to where the water is deeper and fish is plenty and during the wet season, these boat houses are again towed to the higher ground as the lake can become choppy making living in the house difficult. -

how much was the damage? -
so you thought the beggar can't running after you in the middle of the lake? these kids are begging for US$1 from the tourists. we were encourage not to give as by giving, it may discourage the parent from sending them to school but on the other hand, could they even afford?.
We had brought some sweets and toys from Singapore to give them away. Whenever we took them out, we were immediately swarm by little children putting their hands out grabbing at every opportunity. -
thank you. we spend about $1K because we flew in and living in a 4 star hotel. I think if you took a flight to bangkok and then by bus/tuk-tuk or any means of transport and living in guset houses, it may be much cheaper. too bad we didn't have mush time otherwise i will certainly do that.Originally posted by TerenceYYK:nice!

Something for the kids instead of money which the parents will use and maybe even exploit them -
for the lucky few boat people kids who could afford, there are boat schools, boat police post, boat clinics and boat church as above. even living in a no man terrorities, there seems to be certain rules that boat people lives by. -

But since earlier posts did mention that most of them dont go to school, I guess that would be useless.
Will remember to bring sweets and toys instead. -
err .. hmm...
ok this view might be disagreeable to some people but.. I feel that when we visit third world countries, we should not hand out goodies to the kids. especiall sweets who give children in villagers decaying teeth because they dont have much access to dentistry or oral care.
why?
it really teaches them that 'tourists' are people who gives things and teaches them to 'beg' from tourists whenever they come. I am sure we have all been to villages, where children follow you for a long long time, asking for food, drinks, pencils, pen, sweet, money. If you dont have toys, they ask for sweets, if you dont have sweets, they ask for money. Somewhere down the road, someone will give something, if you ask long enough or hard enough.
what happens next? the cute kids of today grow up to be the tourist touts of tommorrow. do you still give to them? when they are no longer cute? they are still 'poor' you know.
want to give stationery? give it to the school directly. Usually the teachers will know which children need it more.
giving out little gifts directly to children make you feel good momentarily, and makes them happy very temporarily. but if you really want to do a good deed for them, then consider less easy options that can really improve the villagers lives' better in the long run -
looks really fun i would like to visit sometime!

Is there any restriction on travel documents, cash, taxes, etc. imposed by the authorities? -

the seafood is super cheap ...

2. $$$ restriction? don't know coz did not have that much. US$ is widely used and usually quoted. if need to change Cambodian Riel (currency) don't do it at airport. it is much less than outside.
3. US$25 airport tax on return.
4. spent 4 days and 3 nights. very liesure at night at the pub which is plenty if you stay in Siem Reap Centre. Shopping usually done it the day. -
we arrange a guide for US$6 per day/pax including transport. We bought a 3 day pass for visit to Angkor Wat. Backpack is pretty safe but nobody tell you all the hsitory and stories without a guide.Originally posted by ShrodingersCat:looks really fun i would like to visit sometime!
