but i realise that it had made me a better man today.

Maybe I wuld but thats when child goes overboard and when no words can get through his/her head. Personally i feel that frequent canning is not advisable....then again I might be too immature to comment on something like that.. according to my mother

True. Some of those children were already hardened to the corporal punishment that their parents were dishing out, while the other parents had no idea how to communicate with theirs. There's a debate on this issue in the other forum I frequent, (the question was, why is wife battery a crime when punishing a child isn't) and it divides the Europeans and Brits who have posted. I think I'll show them this thread if the need arises. I can't post a link as it's in a section that's open only to members.
I haven't spoken on this issue but (if I ever have children, however unlikely it seems to me) I'd use the rotan where reasoning fails, but never without the latter and never in anger. -
if it takes that much to drive the point across and drill some discipline in them... yes...
