Teacher wins appeal against insurer over legal costs
Posted: 03 October 2007 1351 hrs
SINGAPORE: Primary school teacher Jonathan Lock has won his legal battle, when the Court of Appeal ruled in his favour.
Lock will not have to pay a single cent of the legal bills amounting to some S$120,000.
The Court of Appeal on Wednesday ordered all the different parties to bear their own costs.
35-year old Lock was involved in an accident in November 2004.
He took the case to the Primary Dispute Resolution Centre which awarded him $188 and ordered the other vehicle owner to pay S$1,200 in costs.
This led NTUC Income, the other vehicle owner's insurer, to take the appeal to the High Court.
Lock then found himself saddled with a S$45,000 legal bill from NTUC Income.
Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong also ruled that Lock's former lawyer Andrew Hanam cannot bill him, without the permission of the Appeal Court.
Hanam's fees amounted to S$80,000.
CJ Chan also directed the Singapore Law Society to determine if there is a case to hold an inquiry against Mr Hanam for professional misconduct. -CNA/vm
