I knew this chap for like, what ? ... 8 years already ? ... while I was still back in Canada he "came out" of his closet so to speak ... while we were all a bit surprised life went on as per normal ... sort of ... except that now I'm not 14000 km away, but right here ...
it's getting a bit difficult to turn down a gathering of sorts, but I just don't think I'll be comfortable you know ...
for sure, I don't mind homos and buggers or those who swings for the other team, just so long as they are safely away from me you know ...

If he hasnt hit on u before, its unlikely he's gonna hit on u now...

just like its not always possible that a girl might want to hit on you simply cos she is female and you are male.. and you are both heterosexual...
and what if a girl you don't like, expresses her feelings towards you? You reject as nicely as possible.
.. the same thing goes also just becos your friend is male and you are male, doesn't mean he will go for you.
But more importantly, is the question - is the friendship more important to you than his sexual orientation? -

hmm i'm slightly homophobic becos i have some yin ying of lesbo friends hitting on me when i was young. But as i grew up, i slowly understand that the idea of discriminating people becos of their sexual orientation isn't right. I also have lesbo and gay friends and really.. they are usually nicer people to hang out with. We should respect people for their character, how they treat people and for who they are.. not becos of their sexual orientation. What wrong with being sexually out of the norm ? They don't harm people becos of that.
