it is not a good feeling being said no to.. it does not feel good...
if we love the lady, we will do what we can.. hopefully change her mind about things...
but after a while, if no is no, we will go away.. because it only brings grief to both the lady and ourselves..
however, if the 'no' doesn't mean no.. because i've seen it myself how some women play with the emotions of men thinking it's a game, it will all end in tears... the man may walk, the woman may feel terrible for pushing him away, and both are torn up...
so.. if you think there is a chance, and you want to let it happen, don't string him along... go tell him there may be a chance... and you may change your mind...
and both the good men and women have been abused so much in the past that all are wary..

With age comes a bit of wisdom. One cannot force things. I've had the door slammed in my face once more since then and I just accepted it.
However, I really cannot comment on your stalkers who can keep this up for years...and AFTER you get married somemore. I think they need professional help

There's this man who wrote this funny book called 'The MANual' and I was flipping through it at K-mart and laughed! In one of the chapters, he wrote that some men like to act up in front of their g/f's because they want her to put her foot down and show them that she will not tolerate his rubbish and nonsense. A few men wrote in there that when they feel that they want to become serious with their girls, they will 'test' her by acting up. If she puts her foot down and tells them off and remains confident and firm, apparently, they get turned on by this or whatever.
If you ask me, it's a stupid game, but I have personally come across men who are like that.
I think we have seen couples like that too. The next time you find yourself observing a couple and wonder why the man still stays with a woman who seems to make demands and doesn't seem to treat him as nice as you'd expect a g/f / wife should treat her partner, you'll know that you're seeing a man who is a perfect example of a b!tch lover!
